Abstract: An illumination system with a controllable aspect ratio and a projection system using the illumination system are provided to enhance optical efficiency and contrast of the illumination system by adjusting the aspect ratio of the outgoing surface of an optical source unit. An illumination system with a controllable aspect ratio includes a display panel and an asymmetrical diaphragm. An incident light toward a projection lens unit is controlled by rotating plural micromirrors. The asymmetrical diaphragm adjusts an allowed incident angle of the incident light from the display panel. Optical source units(100a,100b,100c) are composed of light emitting elements. The optical source unit has an outgoing surface, whose aspect ratio is different from that of the display panel. An aspect ratio adjuster(120) changes the aspect ratio of the outgoing surface of the optical source unit to be equal to that of the display panel.

Abstract: An optical source module and an image projection apparatus using the same are provided to increase brightness of a displayed image by removing optical loss due to the polarizing property of an image forming element. An optical source module includes a light emitting element chip(3), a reflective mirror(5), and a polarizing alignment unit(8). The light emitting element chip is installed on a base, generates and emits an illumination light, and reflects an incident light from the outside. The reflective mirror is coupled with the base and reflects the light from the light emitting element chip forwardly. The polarizing alignment unit is installed at an exit portion of the reflective mirror and feeds back a portion of the light to the reflective mirror. The polarizing alignment unit converts the light from the light emitting element chip to a single polarized light and outputs the converted light. The light, which is fed back by the polarizing alignment unit, is reflected by one of the light emitting element chip and the base and guided toward the polarizing alignment unit.
