Abstract: There is provided a one part, actinic radiation-activated, and room temperature curable epoxy-based adhesive. There is also provided an adhesive initiator system based on an iodonium salt combined with an thioxanthone photosensitizer such as isopropyl thioxanthone. Abstract: Investment casting compositions are provided including: a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer; b) a hydroxyl-functional poly(alkylene carbonate) polymer; c) a free-radical initiator; and d) a catalyst that aids in thermal decomposition of the hydroxyl-functional poly(alkylene carbonate) polymer. Methods of using the investment casting compositions are also provided, including: a) forming at least one investment casting pattern from an investment casting composition; b) investing the at least one investment casting pattern with at least one ceramic slurry to form a mold shell; and c) heating the mold shell to initiate decomposition of the hydroxyl-functional poly(alkylene carbonate) polymer and to form a ceramic mold. Use of these investment casting compositions tends to result in little to no cracking of the mold shell as well as allowing for significant removal of the investment casting pattern from the mold shell, upon heating of the mold shell.

Abstract: An adhesive composition is described comprising unpolymerized cyclic olefin, a ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) catalyst or precatalyst thereof, and one or more adhesion promoter polymers. In one embodiment, the adhesion promoter is a polyolefin comprising maleic anhydride or silicon-containing moieties. In one embodiment, a combination of at least one polymeric polyisocyanate and at least one polyolefin comprising maleic anhydride or silicon-containing moieties provides a synergistic improvement. In another embodiment, a polymeric polyisocyanate adhesion promoter comprising oxygen atoms in the backbone has been found useful for bonding substrates such as polyamide, polyether ether ketone, or polyether imide. Also described are methods of bonding a substrate and articles, such as an electric battery cold plate assembly.

Abstract: A method of disposing an adhesive composition onto a first surface of a first substrate comprises: a) disposing a photoactivatable adhesive precursor composition onto at least a portion of the first surface of the first substrate according to a predetermined pattern, and b) exposing the photoactivatable adhesive precursor composition to actinic electromagnetic radiation, thereby providing an adhesive precursor composition that spontaneously cures to provide the adhesive composition. The photoactivatable adhesive precursor composition comprises: at least one free-radically polymerizable compound and a photoactivatable redox initiation system comprising: (i) at least one photoactivatable reducing agent precursor; (ii) at least one transition metal compound comprising at least one metal selected from groups 5 to 11 in the Periodic Table of the Elements; (iii) optional organic peroxide; and (iv) optional quaternary ammonium halide. An article preparable according to the method is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of making an adhesive is provided, including obtaining an actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition disposed against a surface of an actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a first portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a first irradiation dosage. The method further includes irradiating a second portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a second irradiation dosage. The first portion and the second portion are adjacent to or overlapping with each other and the first irradiation dosage and the second irradiation dosage are not the same. The method forms an integral adhesive having a variable thickness in an axis normal to the surface of the actinic radiation-transparent substrate. Also, an adhesive article is provided, including a substrate having a major surface and an integral adhesive disposed on the major surface of the substrate. Further, methods are provided, including receiving, by a manufacturing device having one or more processors, a digital object comprising data specifying an article; and generating, with the manufacturing device by an additive manufacturing process, the article based on the digital object. A system is provided, including a display that displays a 3D model of an article; and one or more processors that, in response to the 3D model selected by a user, cause a 3D printer to create a physical object of an article.

Abstract: A one-part thermally curable composition comprises at least one polyuretdione, thermally activatable amine curative; optional epoxy resin; optional polythiol having an average sulfhydryl group functionality of at least 2; and optional acid stabilizer. The at least one polyuretdione has an average uretdione ring functionality of at least 1.2, and is a reaction product of components comprising: a uretdione-containing material comprising a reaction product of a diisocyanate reacted with itself; a first hydroxyl-containing compound having a single OH group, wherein the first hydroxyl-containing compound is a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol; and a second hydroxyl-containing compound having more than one OH group, wherein the second hydroxyl-containing compound is a polyol and the reaction product comprises 0.2 to 0.5, inclusive, of hydroxyl equivalents relative to isocyanate equivalents. Cured compositions and assemblies including them are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a polymeric material including a polymerized reaction product of a polymerizable composition including components, a polythiol having an average sulfhydryl group functionality of 2 or greater, and an acidic stabilizer. The components include a uretdione-containing material including a reaction product of a diisocyanate reacted with itself; a first hydroxyl-containing compound having more than one OH group; and an optional second hydroxyl-containing compound having a single OH group. The second hydroxyl-containing compound is a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol. The present disclosure also provides a two-part composition, in which a polymeric material is included in the first part and the second part includes at least one accelerator. Further, a method of adhering two substrates is provided, including obtaining a two-part composition; combining at least a portion of the first part with at least a portion of the second part to form a mixture; disposing at least a portion of the mixture on a first substrate; and contacting a second substrate with the mixture disposed on the first substrate. The disclosure also provides a polymeric material and a method of curing a two-part composition. Advantageously, two-part compositions according to the present disclosure can be used as sealants, coatings, and adhesive systems having a two-step cure with handling and performance similar to existing two-part urethane systems, but with less sensitivity to water.

A multilayer article is also provided, including a substrate, a chromonic amine layer disposed on the substrate, and a curable layer disposed on the chromonic amine layer. Methods of making a cured composition and of adhering two substrates together are further provided.
