Abstract: A sample collection system includes a housing comprising a first part and a second part, the first and second parts being movable relative to one another; porous sample collection media disposed along an airflow path in the first part; and an assay disposed on the second part and constructed to receive a sample captured by the porous sample collection media. The first and second parts are rotatably movable relative to one another. Moving the first and second parts relative to one another aligns the porous sample collection media with at least a portion of the assay. The assay may be a lateral flow assay or a vertical flow assay. The media is constructed to collect a sample from exhalation airflow. A collected sample may be eluted from the media onto the assay using a liquid.

Abstract: A filter assembly comprises an air filter medium and a prefilter medium. The prefilter medium comprises a second nonwoven fibrous web comprising poly(4-methylpentene) and an electrostatic charging additive and has a second electret charge. The filter assembly is configured such that air passing through the prefilter is directed through the air filter medium. A respirator includes the filter assembly. A prefilter assembly comprises a third nonwoven fibrous web retained by a prefilter frame. The third nonwoven fibrous web comprises: core-sheath fiber comprising a fiber core having a poly(4-methylpentene) sheath layer disposed thereon; and an electrostatic charging additive, wherein the electrostatic charging additive is contained in at least one of the fiber core or the sheath layer. The third nonwoven fibrous web has a third electret charge.

Abstract: A flat-fold respirator is made from a stiff filtration panel joined to the remainder of the respirator through at least one line of demarcation. The panel contains a porous monocomponent monolayer nonwoven web that contains charged intermingled continuous monocomponent polymeric fibers of the same polymeric composition and that has sufficient basis weight or inter-fiber bonding so that the web exhibits a Gurley Stiffness greater than 200 mg and the respirator exhibits less than 20 mm H2O pressure drop. The respirator may be formed without requiring additional stiffening layers, bicomponent fibers, or other reinforcement and can be flat-folded for storage. Scrap from the manufacturing process may be recycled to make additional stiff filtration panel web.

Abstract: In some examples, an abrasive particle transfer system including a production tool comprising a dispensing surface and a back surface opposite the dispensing surface, wherein the production tool has cavities formed therein, wherein, on a respective basis, each of the cavities extends from a first opening at the dispensing surface through the production tool to a second opening at the back surface, and wherein the second opening is smaller than the first opening; abrasive particles removably disposed within at least some of the cavities such that a portion of each particle protrudes from the back surface through the second opening; and a transfer roll having an outer surface, wherein the production tool is guided along a web path such that the portion of the abrasive particles protruding from the back surface of the production tool contacts the outer surface of the abrasive particle transfer roll to displace the abrasive particles.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to multi-layer composite articles including at least two nonwoven web layers. Each or the layers may be a spunbonded web, and each may include biodegradable materials. The multi-layered composites of the present disclosure are particularly well suited for air filtration, as they can combine a high dust holding capacity with sufficient strength, dimensional stability, and a relatively low pressure drop.

Abstract: A sample collection device includes a planar sheet of material having opposing edges and a first major surface and an opposing second major surface, the planar sheet of material having at least two fold lines. A porous sample collection media has at least three edges and opposing major surfaces, at least one edge is fixed to the first major surface of the planar sheet of material. The planar sheet of material is configured to form an airflow channel by fixing the opposing edges together, the airflow channel extends from a mouthpiece end to an air outlet end. The porous sample collection media substantially occludes the airflow channel between the mouthpiece end and the air outlet end.
