Abstract: An apparatus can comprise a body and a first portion. The first portion can be coupled to the body and moveable therewith. The first portion can comprise a rigidifying material and a layer. The rigidifying material can be positioned in a chamber defined by an envelope formed of a gas-impermeable material. A pressure within the chamber can be variable between at least a lower pressure state and a higher pressure state. In the higher pressure state the material is relatively flexible, and in the lower pressure state the material can be relatively less flexible than in the higher pressure state. The layer can be manipulatable by the rigidifying material. More particularly, the layer can have a first state when the pressure within the chamber is in the higher pressure state. In the first state, the layer can be formable by the target surface to take on a desired shape that can be substantially a match of the target surface. The layer can have a second state when the pressure within the chamber is in the lower pressure state. In the second state, the layer can maintain the desired shape and can be substantially less formable than in the first state.

Abstract: A flexible abrasive article includes a unitary backing having first and second opposed major surfaces and comprising a polyurethane. In some embodiments, the backing has an average thickness of from 4 to 6 mils (102 to 152 microns), a tensile strength of 500 to 3200 psi (3.45 to 22.1 MPa), and an ultimate elongation of 230 to 530 percent. In some embodiments, the flexible abrasive article has a tensile strength of 400 to 2400 psi (2.8 to 16.5 MPa), and a ultimate elongation of 180 to 380 percent. An abrasive layer is disposed on and secured to the unitary backing.

Abstract: Provided are abrasive articles in which the make layer, abrasive particle layer, and size layer are coated onto a backing according to a coating pattern characterized by a plurality of discrete islands. The coating pattern has features in which all three components are generally in registration with each other, while providing a pervasive uncoated area extending across the backing. Advantageously, this configuration provides a coated abrasive that displays superior curl-resistance compared with previously disclosed abrasive articles. Moreover, this configuration resists loading, resists de-lamination, has enhanced flexibility, and decreases the quantity of raw materials required to achieve the same level of performance as conventional abrasive articles.

Abstract: A method for decorating a motor vehicle is disclosed comprising applying a mask to a painted exterior surface on the motor vehicle, the mask having a masked portion and an open portion that leaves part of the clearcoat layer exposed, wherein the masked portion and the open portion cooperate to define the image that is to be imparted to the surface, and wherein, prior to abrading the exposed part of the clearcoat layer, the exposed part of the clearcoat layer is free of defects. The exposed part of the clearcoat layer to is abraded to provide the exposed part of the clearcoat layer with a matte finish. The mask is removed to reveal an image having a matte finish region and an unabraded region.

Abstract: A porous coated abrasive article comprises a porous backing having opposed first and second major surfaces, and a porous abrasive layer disposed on the first major surface. The porous backing comprises a porous oriented thermoplastic film. The porous backing has a land portion and openings extending between the first and second major surfaces. Each opening has a respective area at the first surface, wherein the openings have a number density of 5 to 4600 openings per square inch, and wherein the total area of the openings is from 1 to 90 area percent, based on the combined total areas of the land portion and the openings. The porous abrasive layer is disposed on the first major surface of the porous backing. The porous abrasive layer comprises abrasive particles retained in a binder and has an abrading surface opposite the porous backing, and the second major surface of the porous backing and the abrading surface are in fluid communication through at least some of the openings. A method of making the porous coated abrasive article using flame perforation is also disclosed.
