A cartridge feeder apparatus for automated diagnostic systems is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a cartridge hopper means for receiving, storing and feeding cartridges (68) to a cartridge orientation mechanism, the cartridge orientation mechanism comprised of two opposed engageable orientation means (239) for engaging and disengaging a cartridge at each end of the cartridge. The cartridge has a funnel opening at a first end and a generally flat bottom at a second end.

A heater assembly for precision temperature and delivery control of liquids and an automated, continuous and random access analytical system containing such heater assembly and capable of simultaneously effecting multiple assays of a plurality of liquid samples are disclosed. The heater assembly comprises a body having internal resistance heating means and temperature control means, said body having a cavity suitable for accommodating liquid tubing means, said liquid tubing means in communication with liquid inlet and outlet means, wherein said cavity is suitable for housing a tubing means for maintaining liquids at a predetermined temperature, and wherein said liquid outlet means is suitable for forced or gravity release of the liquids and is mounted directly above analytical means for receiving liquids.
