Abstract: Process for coating objects by electrostatic spraying with enamel powder, the novelty being that, in spraying a cloud of any desired type of electrostatic powder coating, means are employed so the average specific resistance (ASR) of the cloud matches the requirements for good spraying. The means pref. provide an ASR high enough to ensure good electrostatic adhesion, but low enough to avoid counter-emission; and the coating thickness is pref. controlled by adjusting the ASR. The pref. means are (a) heating the fluidising air for the powder feed funnel(s) and possibly the carrier air; (b) mixing fresh powder with recycled powder, esp. using 30-50% fresh powder in the mixt. The powder coating obtd. have good adhesion, without crater formation.

Abstract: A powder feed device for supplying a powder dispensing apparatus such as a powder spray gun of an electrostatic powder deposition system. Entrained powder is extracted from a fluidization tank and transported through a half-inch diameter tube or hose to the dispensing apparatus. To prevent clumps of powder and/or powder adhering to the walls of the tube or hose while permitting reduced air flow speed of about 2 to 3 m/s an electric field is provided in the tube or hose and applied by an outer conductor extending around the tube or hose and an inner wire conductor inside the tube or hose extending in the direction of the flow of entrained powder, which conductors are connected across an AC voltage source. The electric field may operate constantly or intermittently.

Abstract: Electrostatic paint spray apparatus having rotary spray head with an air seal. To prevent paint or solvent from entering antifriction bearings, the shaft rotating at high speed is provided with an air seal in an intermediate zone between the bearings and the spray head. Air from a source of compressed air communicating with inlet flows through channel into groove and from there via passageways into the annular air feed chamber. Air leaves the feed chamber between depending lip and shaft, preventing the entry of paint or solvent, and operating even when the apparatus is not spraying. Air is throttled in the other direction through the air flow path to an expansion chamber and then is vented to the atmosphere via vents without contaminating the bearings.

Abstract: A hollow object, consisting of a flat base with a rim, is suspended so the base is vertical, and is then sprayed with electrically-charged enamel powder. During spraying, a gas stream is directed onto the lowest inner part of the rim, and a second, local spraying operation is then used to coat the lowest part of the rim with powder. An auxiliary spraying operation may also be used to coat the inner surface of the highest part of the rim, but the latter is pref. coated during the main spraying operation. The pref. plant uses a conveyor for the vertical suspension of the objects, while they travel past nozzles spraying powder onto the base and the inner surface of the upper rim; another nozzle blows a gas stream onto the lowest inner part of the rim. The lowest part of the rim is then coated by yet another nozzle. Used for the electrostatic spraying of enamel powder, e.g. onto the lids of kitchen stoves. The influence of gravity normally prevents a uniform powder coating; the invention eliminates this problem.
