    Abstract: Disclosed herein are liquid-crystal display (LCD) touch screens that integrate the touch sensing elements with the display circuitry. The integration may take a variety of forms. Touch sensing elements can be completely implemented within the LCD stackup but outside the not between the color filter plate and the array plate. Alternatively, some touch sensing elements can be between the color filter and array plates with other touch sensing elements not between the plates. In another alternative, all touch sensing elements can be between the color filter and array plates. The latter alternative can include both conventional and in-plane- switching (IPS) LCDs. In some forms, one or more display structures can also have a touch sensing function. Techniques for manufacturing and operating such displays, as well as various devices embodying such displays are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A touch screen includes a LCD display with integral touch sensing. The screen includes a first substrate with display control circuitry formed thereon. The display circuitry has a pair of electrodes (8400, 8402) for each sub-pixel of the display (as found in in-plane-switching LCDs). All touch sensing elements are disposed between the first and an adjacent second substrate. The display electrodes may be used to effect touch sensing. A method of operating a touch screen is also claimed in which display pixels form touch sensing rows and columns. The rows are grounded during a first time period whilst the display is updated and stimulated during a second time period. The columns are used to sense a touch during the second period. Also disclosed are other arrangements for integrating touch sensing into a LCD stack.

The display control circuitry may operate the display in 5 different modes. In a paper mode, display control circuitry may use stored spectral reflectance data to adjust display colors such that the colors appear as they would on a printed sheet of paper. In a low light mode when the ambient light level is below a threshold, the light emitted 10 from the display may be adjusted to mimic the appearance of an incandescent light source. In a bright light mode when the ambient light level exceeds a threshold, the light emitted from the display may be adjusted to maximize readability in bright light. The target white point of the 15 display may be adjusted based on which mode the display is operating in.

    Abstract: Displays such as organic light-emitting diode displays may be provided with touch sensing capabilities. A touch sensor (14) may be formed from electrodes (44) located on a thin-film encapsulation layer (84) or one or more sides of a polarizer. A single-sided or double-sided touch sensor panel may be attached to the upper or lower surface of a polarizer. Control circuitry (36) may be used to provide control signals to light-emitting diodes (50) in the display using a grid of control lines. The control lines and transparent electrode structures such as indium tin oxide structures formed on a thin-film encapsulation layer (84) or polarizer may be used as electrodes for a touch sensor. Displays (14) may have active regions (A) and inactive peripheral portions (IR). The displays (14) may have edge portions that are bent along a bend axis (122) that is within the active region (A) to form a borderless display. Virtual buttons (VB) may be formed on the bent edge portions.
