Abstract: An airbag module may have an inflator, a cushion, and a housing that contains the inflator and the cushion. The housing has an outer wall formed of a flexible material and a bracket designed to be attached to a vehicle. During deployment, the cushion is expelled out of the housing through the bracket. The inflator remains in the housing and inflation gas is conveyed to the cushion through the housing. The inflator may be retained by flaps wrapped around the inflator and secured to a perpendicularly oriented diffuser of the inflator. Alternatively, the diffuser may extend through an orifice formed in a fabric wall within the housing, and retention portions of the outer wall may be wrapped around the opposite side of the inflator. The airbag module may be mounted in an instrument panel to provide front seat, passenger's side impact protection without requiring a rigid module housing.

Abstract: Housing for air bag inflator (86) has a base (90) and a spaced apart coaxial top wall (94) with aligned peripheral edges and central openings. Outer side wall (98) extends between the aligned peripheral edges of base (90) and top wall (94). Wall (98) has normally sealed gas exit ports (102). Forged cylindrical member (108) that is shaped like a rivet has an integral inner side wall (124). Wall (124) is in coaxial alignment with the outer top wall (94). Inner side wall (124) has an upper end in contact with the top wall (94) and a lower end portion crimped over against the lower surface of the base (90). This defines a central inner space in the housing for the ignition train, and having normally sealed ignition ports therein. Outer side wall (98) has an annular end flange at a lower end portion (144) crimped over against a lower surface of the base (90) to close the housing, with the base (90), top wall (94), inner wall (124) and outer wall (98) defining an annular outer chamber which provides an outer pressure vessel (164) for contg. gas generating material (92). The ignition train is housed in an inner pressure vessel (128) that is in the central inner space, being press fit against the inner side wall (124), and having normally sealed ignition exit ports therein. Pressure vessel (128) has an open end into which is inserted a squib (152) that closes the open end of pressure vessel (128) and contg. all the prim. and sec. pyrotechnic charges that is required to ignite gas generating material (92).

Abstract: A moulded cover (10) for an automotive airbag module is provided with one or more windows (12) therethrough to transmit light from a light source (18) within said module. The light source (18) which may be a light emitting diode is typically used to indicate the location or identify function switches under the moulded cover. The cover (10) and window (12) may be formed by a two part moulding process or an aperture may be left in the cover in which a solid preformed window is fixed. Alternatively the cover may be formed of transparent thermoplastic material and paint applied to define a window region. A thinned cover region (16) may surround the window (12) to increase flexibility and facilitate actuation of a switch located in the module behind the window (12).

The knee bolster includes an air bag system (22, 24, 26) which propels the knee bolster panel rearward during deployment. The activated knee bolster allows automobile designers the flexibility to provide increased leg room in the vehicle while maintaining the same level of safety during a crash.

Abstract: Housing for air bag inflator (86) has a base (90) and a spaced apart coaxial top wall (94) with aligned peripheral edges and central openings. Outer side wall (98) extends between the aligned peripheral edges of base (90) and top wall (94). Wall (98) has normally sealed gas exit ports (102). Forged cylindrical member (108) that is shaped like a rivet has an integral inner side wall (124). Wall (124) is in coaxial alignment with the outer top wall (94). Inner side wall (124) has an upper end in contact with the top wall (94) and a lower end portion crimped over against the lower surface of the base (90). This defines a central inner space in the housing for the ignition train, and having normally sealed ignition ports therein. Outer side wall (98) has an annular end flange at a lower end portion (144) crimped over against a lower surface of the base (90) to close the housing, with the base (90), top wall (94), inner wall (124) and outer wall (98) defining an annular outer chamber which provides an outer pressure vessel (164) for contg. gas generating material (92). The ignition train is housed in an inner pressure vessel (128) that is in the central inner space, being press fit against the inner side wall (124), and having normally sealed ignition exit ports therein. Abstract: An inflator device for inflating an inflatable cushion of an inflatable cushion restraint system. The inflator device includes a supply of gas generant material disposed within a sealed chamber, and an initiator device in reaction initiation combination with the supply of gas generant material. A venting orifice connects the chamber to the surrounding ambient environment, and a rupturable seal seals the venting orifice. Upon reaction initiation of the gas generant material to produce inflation gas, the rupturable seal ruptures to vent the chamber to the ambient environment. A valve assembly can be disposed adjacent the venting orifice. A moveable valve piston, in combination with an actuator device, can block the venting orifice as needed to close the venting orifice and stop inflation gas venting. An optional tether release mechanism can be used in combination with the valve assembly to release a cushion tether upon closing of the venting orifice.
