Abstract:
Plasticiser blends of C10 to C14 dialkyl phthalates or C8 to C10 trimellitates and C11 to C14 dialkyl adipates are provided. The blends may be used in the manufacture of flexible PVC formulations, for example, as wire and cable coatings, having in several embodiments, good performance over a wide temperature range and are particularly useful for automotive cables.
Abstract:
Esters of cyclohexane polycarboxylic acids are used as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride to enable products with comparable mechanical properties to be obtained using less polyvinyl chloride. Use of these esters also produces formulations with increased stability to ultra-violet light, improved low temperature properties, lower viscosity and improved processability as well as reduced smoke on burning. The esters of cyclohexane polycarboxylic acids may be used alone or in admixture with other plasticizers when the esters of cyclohexane polycarboxylic acids may act as viscosity depressants. Fast fusing plasticizers may also be included. The formulations are particularly useful in the production of a range of goods from semi-rigid to highly flexible materials and are particularly useful in the production of medical materials such as blood bags and tubing.
Abstract:
Esters produced by the catalyzed reaction of alcohols and acids or anhydrides are neutralized by treatment with an aqueous alkaline alkali metal salt solution in an amount that provides less than a stoichiometric amount of alkali metal salt in relation to the acidity of the crude ester and the amount of water present during the treatment is from 0.7 to 1.4 wt % of water based on the weight of crude ester. When using titanium as the esterification catalyst, the ester resulting from this process contains less than 0.01 ppm by weight of titanium residue, so that it is storage stable when stored in the presence of an antioxidant.
Abstract:
C4-C7 secondary aliphatic alcohol esters of cyclohexanediacid are especially useful as plasticizers for PVC. In embodiments, these fast fusing plasticizers are useful in plastisol formulations to help improve the processability of flexible PVC material. In preferred embodiments these same plasticizers can be used in blends with other plasticizers, especially slower fusing plasticizers or plasticizers with reduced solvency, such as di-2-propylheptyl phthalate or di-isononyl cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, to improve processability.

Abstract:
A method for preparation of secondary alcohols with a high proportion of hydroxyl group at the C2 position is disclosed. Alkyl carboxylates, high in alpha-methylcarboxylate content, are produced via reaction of an alpha-olefin and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a cerium catalyst. The resultant alkyl carboxylate is hydrolyzed to yield a secondary alcohol with a high 2-hydroxyl content. The secondary alcohol may be used to prepare esters, especially phthalate esters or cyclohexanoate diesters, which are useful as plasticizers. These esters are more effective as plasticizers than esters derived from other secondary alcohols due to their high C2 point of attachment.
