    Abstract: The invention comprises dyes of general formula wherein R is H or a C1-C4 hydrocarbon radical which may contain alkoxy groups as substituents, Y is H, hydroxyl, the radical or an alkylamino, arylamino, alkyl ether, aryl ether, alkyl thioether, aryl thioether or carboxylic acid ester radical and Z is a hydroxyl group or a group and the anthraquinone nucleus may contain other substituents. They are prepared by reacting an appropriate mono- or di-aminoanthraquinone with 2-(4-bromobenzoyl)-propionic acid or an ester thereof and the carboxylic acid group may be subsequently esterified by reaction with appropriate alcohols if desired. The reaction preferably takes place at 100-230 DEG C. in a solvent, e.g. nitrobenzene, naphthalene or chlorobenzenes using a slight stoichiometric excess of the propionic acid derivative. Preferably a basic reacting agent, e.g. alkali metal carbonates, acetates, and copper compounds may be used to accelerate the reaction.
