Abstract: Water-soluble polymers are made by polymerizing in aqueous solution one or more unsaturated compounds which individually or together are water-soluble and form water-soluble polymers, and then on to the resultant active polymer which has not been removed from its polymerization medium there are polymerized 0,5 to 30% by weight of the primary polymer of one or more unsaturated compounds which contain sulphonic acid and/or phosphonic acid radicals or radicals which yield sulphonic and/or phosphonic radicals after hydrolysis, until the second polymer formed has a K-value of at least 100 and wherein the quantity and nature of the monomers added to the primary polymer are such that the resulting product is water-soluble or water-solubilizable by hydrolysis. Monomers specified for use in forming the primary polymer are acrylic and methacrylic acids and their salts and amides, acrylic esters, acrylonitrile, vinyl pyrrolidone, styrene, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl chloride and vinyl esters. Monomers specified containing sulphonic and phosphonic radicals are vinyl sulphonic acid, styrene monosulphonic and disulphonic acids, vinyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, vinylimidazole and vinylbenzimidazole sulphonic acids, reaction products of acrylyl or methacrylyl chloride with aminoalkylene sulphonic acids, cyanuric acid derivatives containing sulphonic acid groups and an acrylamide group, and corresponding compounds containing phosphonic acid radicals. The sulphonic or phosphonic acids may be used in the form of their salts or their esters or amides which are saponified after polymerization. Polymerization may be initiated by compounds such as azo-diisobutyramide, hydrogen peroxide and persulphates which may be activated with sulphites, hyposulphites, amines, ascorbic acid, cobaltous salts and ferrous salts. The examples describe processes in which: (1) acrylamide is polymerized in aqueous solution with the acid of potassium persulphate and formaldehyde sulphoxylate, followed by the polymerization in the same medium of sodium vinyl sulphonate; and (2) acrylamide is polymerized in aqueous solution with the aid of hydrogen peroxide and sodium sulphite, followed by the polymerization in the same medium of diethyl vinyl phosphonate with the subsequent hydrolysis of the product by heating in the aqueous medium.
