Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for distilling a thermolabile monomer. SOLUTION: A thermolabile monomer and formaldehyde are continuously and individually fed into a lower part of a distillation tower up to its middle part in a liquid state; the formaldehyde is vaporized by means of an evaporator in the bottom of the tower; the formaldehyde is discharged from the bottom of the tower together with components having higher boiling point than the thermolabile monomer; the formaldehyde is refilled by adding fresh formaldehyde; the thermolabile monomer is removed from a side discharging port formed at the upper third of the distillation tower; the distillation is controlled so that the monomer contains formaldehyde in an amount of less than 5 wt.%; and a product flow containing components having lower boiling points than the thermolabile monomer is removed from the top of the distillation tower.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying N-vinylformamide capable of producing high-quality N-vinylformamide for making a polymer having especially high molecular weight having a K value by Fikentscher's method larger than 200. SOLUTION: This N-vinylformamide distillate is obtained by fractional distillation of N-formamide using a column under reduced pressure. The distillation is continuously carried out in the presence of formamide under 0.5-30 millibar measured at the top of the column. The distillation is controlled so that N- vinylformamide having 1-6wt.% formamide content as the distillate is obtained to give the objective N-vinylformamide for producing an N-vinylformamide polymer having a K value larger than 200, containing 1-6wt.% formamide.

Abstract: N-vinylformamide is polymerized with or without other water-soluble monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and with or without water-insoluble monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in not less than 30% strength by weight aqueous monomer solutions in the presence of a polymerization initiator at not more than 150 degrees C. in a kneader by a method in which the polymerization is carried out to such an extent that the initially formed water-containing polymer gel disintegrates into fine particles and the finely divided polymer obtainable in this manner is hydrolyzed, preferably in the kneader, so that not less than 0.1 mol % of the N-vinylformamide units present in the polymer are converted into vinylamine units. The polymers obtainable in this manner dissolve readily in water. The aqueous solutions are used, for example, in papermaking and tertiary oil production.
