Abstract: Glyoxal is produced by reacting ethylene with nitric acid in aqueous medium in the presence of a palladium salt as catalyst at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C., the concentration of nitric acid in the reaction mixture being 1 to 40% by weight and the amount of palladium salt being more than 0.0001% by weight. The ethylene feed may be pure or commercial ethylene or may contain other gases, e.g. ethane, and the nitric acid may be wholly or partly replaced by nitrogen oxides which yield nitric acid under the reaction conditions. Preferred palladium salts are the palladous salts, especially the chloride or nitrate, or complexes thereof but other palladium salts or substances which give palladium salts under the reaction conditions, e.g. palladium metal, may be employed. The process may be performed with co- or counter-current gas and catalyst solution flow at sub-, super- or atmospheric pressures. The catalyst may be removed from the aqueous reaction product by, for example, ion or redox exchangers or electrolytic deposition and reused. Glyoxal is recovered from the aqueous product by conventional methods.

Abstract: Production of alkynols and/or alkynediols by reaction of acetylene with aldehydes in a liquid reaction medium in the presence of a heavy metal acetylide as catalyst and in the presence or absence of basic reagents, at least one of the starting materials being introduced in gaseous form. The catalyst is suspended in the liquid medium and during the reaction a portion of the reaction medium is withdrawn and returned at the entry point below the level of the liquid of the gaseous starting material(s) at a speed of 5 to 100 meters per second into the reaction medium and is introduced into a chamber (located in the reaction medium and extending in the direction of the liquid returned) whose inlet opening has a mean diameter from twice to twenty times the mean diameter of the liquid nozzle and whose length is three to thirty times ints hydraulic diameter. The products are important intermediates for example for the production of solvents or may be used in electrolytic baths.

Abstract: A process for purifying gases containing H2S and unsaturated compounds with four or more carbon atoms comprises treating the gas in the absence of free oxygen and/or sulphur dioxide with an open-chain N-alkyl acid amide, a N-dialkyl acid amide, the two alkyl groups of which may together form a ring, a lactam, or an N-alkyl lactam, or a mixture of such compounds at temperatures between -20 DEG C. and +150 DEG C. Suitable compounds are N, N-dimethylformamide; N,N-diethylformamide; N,N-dimethyl acetamide; N,N-dimethyl butyramide; N-methyl pyrrolidone; pyrrolidone; N-butyl-pyrrolidone; and N-formylpiperidine. These compounds may be used pure or may contain other liquids, e.g. water. The gas may be contacted by passing through the liquid, by spraying the liquid, by leading the gas and liquid co-currently, or countercurrently through absorption columns or disintegrators, and the process may be carried out at increased pressure, normal pressure, or in vacuo. The precipitate formed may be separated continuously or discontinuously, e.g. by filtration, centrifuging or distilling. Contact periods for the gas and liquid of 0.8 and 1.2 seconds are described.ALSO:A process for purifying gases containing H2S and unsaturated compounds with four or more carbon atoms comprises treating the gas in the absence of free oxygen and/or sulphur dioxide with an open-chain N-alkyl acid amide, a N-dialkyl acid amide the two alkyl groups of which may together form a ring, a lactam, or an N-alkyl lactam, or a mixture of such compounds at temperatures between -20 DEG C. and + 150 DEG C.
