Abstract: Bis-styryl compounds of the formula in which R denotes substituted phenoxysulphonyl, C4-C13-alkylsulphonyl, C1-C13-alkylsulphonyl which is substituted by hydroxyl or C1-C4-alkanoyloxy and can be interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, C3-C26-alkyl which is interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, or C1-C8-mono-or dialkylsulphamoyl, where the alkyl chain in each case can be interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, R and R independently of one another denote hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy or optionally substituted phenyl, R denotes fluorine, chlorine, cyano, optionally substituted carbamoyl, C1-C8-alkoxycarbonyl, whose alkyl chain can be interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, or optionally substituted phenoxycarbonyl and m, n, p and q are identical or different and in each case independently of one another denote 1 or 2, where the compounds of the formulae are excluded, and their use as optical brighteners for polyesters. n
