Abstract: In the production of dialkylaminophenols (I) by reacting resorcinal (III) with NHR1R2 at 180-250 deg.C 10-40 bar, formation of dealkylation prod. is suppressed by carrying out reaction in presence of an ester (A) of phosphorus acid and opt. (pref.) also of H3PO3. In (I) R1 and R2 = 1-8C alkyl. Pref., (A) is (PhO)3P or a tri(1-8C)alkylphosphite. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are prepd. in high yield with significant inhibition of formation of the 3-monoalkylamino cpd. (I) are intermediates for prepn. of fluorans, useful as colour-forming agents.
