Abstract: Prodn. of bisalkoxy-(iso) -violanthrenediones of formula (IA) and (IB) (R = 1-4C alkyl) is carried out by alkylating the corresp. bishydroxy cpds. (II) (R = G) in an organic liq. medium (III) in the presence of alkali metal salts (IV) of weak acids and tert. aliphatic and/or opt. tert. aromatic amines (V) at 100-200 deg.C. The novelty is that (III) is methyl benzoate. Pref. the alkylating agent is dialkyl sulphate, alkyl o- and/or p-toluenesulphonate, alkyl benzenesulphonate and/or dialkyl methanephosphonate. Pref. (IV) is Na2CO2 and/or K2CO3.

The compounds according to the invention are suitable for stabilising organic material, in particular polyolefins, against oxidative degradation.
