    Abstract: A process for the preparation of pigmentary forms of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide, wherein the diimide is converted to the leuco compound and the latter is oxidized in aqueous suspension, either with exposure to shearing forces in the presence of surfactants, or in the absence of shearing forces and in the presence of non-ionic surfactants, or of mixtures of non-ionic and anionic surfactants. The perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimide pigments give deep, brilliant and transparent full-shade colorations. In white reductions, they give distinctly reddish colorations.

    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a red pigment from perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid N,N'-bis-methylimide which has been obtained by methylating the corresponding diimide or by fusing naphthalic acid N-methylimide with an alkali metal hydroxide which comprises vatting a suspension of N,N'-bis-methylimide dye with 0.5-1.5 times by weight of an alkali metal dithionite in the presence of up to 4 times by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide relative to the quantity of the dithionite, at a temperature of from room temperature to 100 DEG C., to obtain the corresponding leuco compound, cooling the resulting solution to 20 DEG -40 DEG C., isolating and washing the leuco compound with fresh vatting solution until the solution is virtually colorless and clean and then oxidizing the leuco compound.

    Abstract: N,N-Dimethylaniline of formula (I): (where R1,R2 and R3 are halogen, an aromatic residue, an aliphatic residue, -OR4, -COR4 or -NHCOR4 (R4 being an aliphatic residue), and R2 and R3 can also be H or -COOR5 (R5 being an aliphatic or aromatic residue), or adjacent residues R3 or R1 and an adjacent residue R3 can be linked so as to form a fused heterocyclic residue), e.g. p-dimethylamino-chlorobenzene or 3,4-dichloro-N,N-dimethylaniline, are prepd. by reacting nitrobenzenes of formula (II) with formaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst contg. one or more metals of atomic number 24-29 and of a weak organic acid at 35-250 degrees C under a pressure of at least 40 atmos. (I) are intermediate for dyes (esp. crystal violet dyes and reactive dyestuffs) and pesticides. They can also be used as stabilizers for unsatd. polyester resins (cf. BE 640930), and the halo-substd. dimethylanilines can be used as photoinitiators in photosensitive compsns. (cf. US 3515552 and 3539346) for the prodn. of galvanic metal coatings (cf. DT 934508) and in the prodn. of polymethylmethacrylate mouldings (DL17190) Provides simple and economical process giving (I) in better yields, purity and space-time yields than known processes. The process does not require expensive catalysts, and is suitable for large-scale use. Corrosion problems are avoided.

    Abstract: A vat dye obtained by heating a condensation product, which itself has been prepared by heating 3,9-di-(1-anthraquinonylamino)-benz[d,e]anthrone in an aluminum chloride/picoline or aluminum chloride/quinoline melt in the presence of sulfuryl chloride or thionyl chloride, in a melt of an alkali metal hydroxide in an alcohol or glycol or aqueous glycol. The dye gives deep clear brown dyeings having good fastness characteristics.
