    Abstract: Dimethylaminobenzene derivs. of formula (I) are prepd. by reaction of a nitrobenzene deriv. (II) (I;N(CH3)2 is replaced by NO2) with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst contg. >=1 metal of atomic no. 24-29, and of weak organic acids, at 35-150 degrees C and a pressure of >=40 atmos.: (where R1,R2 and R3 = halogen, aromatic radical, aliphatic radical, - -OR4, -SO2N(R4)2- -SO2R4, -SO2NHCOR4, OR4, -COR4 or -NHCOR4; R4 = aliphatic radical; R2 and R3 may also represent H, an aliphatic radical, an aromatic radical, an alkoxy gp., a phenoxy gp. or -COOR5, R5 = aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp., vicinal gps. R3 or vicinal R1 and R3 may form, with the two C atoms to which they are attached, a condensed heterocycle. (I) are starting matls. for dyes; stabilisers for unsatd. polyester resins; and starting matl. for pesticides. Halogen contg. cpds. of formula (I) are photo-initiators for photosensitive matls., coatings for metals and are useful in the mfr. of moulded objects from methyl polyacrylates and polymethacrylates. Sulphonic acids of formula (I) are medicaments useful for the treatment of oedema.

    Abstract: Dimethylaminobenzenesulfonates are manufactured by reacting nitrobenzenesulfonates with formaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst containing a metal of atomic number from 24 to 29 and of phosphoric acid and water at a pH of from 2 to 3.5, at from 50 to 150 DEG C, under a pressure of at least 40 bars, with a residence time of from 1 to 15 minutes. The products are starting materials for the synthesis of dyes, especially of rhodamine dyes, oxazine dyes and reactive dyes, and also of pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

    Abstract: Aryllamines of formula (I): Z-NR1R2 (where Z is of formula and r1-4 are aliphatic radicals, opt. the same; R1,3,4 can be H, and/or R4 can be alkoxy) are prepd. by reacting a prim. or sec. amine of formula H-NR1R2 with a phenol of formula Z-OH, in the presence of a carboxylic acid. Cpds. (I) are useful as inters. for plant protection agents, optical brighteners, partic. aminocoumarins and dyes of xanthene, pyronine, rhodamine, oxasine series, azo dyes and dephenylmethane and triphenylmethane dyes. Simple economic process giving good yields of pure prod. The process does not leave residual tars or form N,N'-disubstd. meta-phenylenediamines, does not corrosive conditions or reagents, forms few pollutants and avoids use of high pressure and temp.
