Abstract: FeCl3-catalysed tetrahydrofuran polymsn. takes place in the presence of a carboxylic acid anhydride, acting as promoter, pref. at 0-70 (esp. 20-65) degrees C. terahydrofuran polymers can be converted to alpha, omega-polytetramethylene ether glycols. Process is non-polluting, cheap, sufficiently variable to allow formation of polymers having mol. wt. 500-3000. Polymer mol. wt. is inversely proportional to anhydride concn.
