Abstract: H3PO4 or a phosphate ester is added to 6 C mono- and/or dicarboxylic acids, esp. the acid mixts. obtd. as by-prods. in cyclohexane oxidn. to cyclohexanone, before their hydrogenation to 6 C alpha, omega-diols. Phosphoric acid or phosphate quantity added may be 10-100 ppm. w.r.t. aq. solns. The phosphates may be derived from 1-20 C alcohols. The formation of residues, i.e. 'cork' formation, causing clogging of plant, is prevented.

Abstract: Prodn. of cyclic ethers (I) comprises liq. phase dehydration of alpha, omega-diols (II) in presence of alumina suspended in the reaction mixt. The alumina is prepd. by pptn. of an alkali aluminate soln. with acid, then heating at 300-1000 deg. C. The method is used to prepare ethers (I) (A is 4-8C alkylene, opt. interrupted by heteroatoms) e.g. 1,4-dioxan from diethylene glycol or 2,5-dihydrofuran from cis-buten-2- diol-1,4. The catalyst gives almost quantitative yields and works effectively even with relatively impure diols. Catalyst consumption is low; it is not corrosive so relatively inexpensive materials can be used for the reactors, and the reaction rate is high e.g. at 210 deg. C 1-3 pts. THF per hr. per pt. catalyst.

Abstract: In a process for the manufacture of butynediol by the reaction of formaldehyde and acetylene in aqueous solution, in which a catalyst is used which is produced by the action of acetylene and formaldehyde on copper (II) compounds, the catalyst becomes inactive when it is treated for a relatively long period with formaldehyde at elevated temperature in the absence of acetylene so that it must constantly remain in contact with acetylene-containing solution if its temperature is above 70 DEG C.

Abstract: Process for prodn. of cyclic ethers from alpha,omega-diols or mono- or diesters of these made by treatment with an acid, comprises treating the alpha,omega-diol (ester) which is capable of forming a cyclic ehter by splitting off water on an acid, with (a) a dil, hydrogen halide acid or an aq. acid with a dissociation constant in water of >=1.10-6, or with a cpd. which forms such acids in aq. soln., and (b) a salt, whereby either (a) and/or (b) gives halide anions. Simple process giving high yields of cyclic ether with min. by-prod. formation. In a typical process, butanediol-1, 4 is converted into tetrahydrofuran.
