    Abstract: Prodn. of 4(5)-nitroimidazole -5(4)-carboxylic acids (I) is effected by reacting an imidazole-4(5) -carboxylic acid (II) with a mixt. of H2SO4 and HNO3 at a temp. of at least 80 deg. C, provided that the reaction mixt. contains no more than 5 wt.% H2O at the start of the reaction. (I) and (II) are opt. 2-substd. by an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp.. The HNO3:(II) molar ratio is 1-4:1. The HNO3:H2SO4 molar ratio is 0.1-1:1. The reaction is effected at 100-160 deg. C using a mixt. of 80-100% HNO3 and oleum, so that the reaction mixt. contains 0-1% H2O.

The imidazole-4(5)-monocarboxylic acids which can be prepared by the process of the invention are useful starting materials for the preparation of dyes, crop protection agents and drugs.
