Abstract: 1405264 Aerating liquids BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 13 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 47273/72 Divided out of 1303163 Heading B1C In a process for oxygenating a body of liquid e.g. waste liquid containing activated sludge, air is introduced into the body of liquid together with a submerged jet of the liquid partly by the inductive action of the jet and partly by a pump. The jet of liquid having a speed of from 5 to 100 metres per second and being directed into an open-ended confined mixing zone 3 of hydraulic diameter 2 to 20 times the diameter of the liquid nozzle 1 and of length 2 to 30 times its hydraulic diameter. Liquid from the vessel 4 is circulated by a pump 7 and fresh waste liquor may be introduced continuously by a line 8, treated liquor overflowing at 5 to settling tanks. The combined air/liquid jet nozzle 1 may be located horizontally, vertically or at any intermediate position.

Abstract: The device for distributing a hydrogenation gas in a hydrogenation reactor consists of a cylindrical reaction part and two spherical ends, the hydrogenation gas and the coal suspended in a liquid being fed together to the hydrogenation reactor via a line arranged centrally in the lower spherical end, and an impingement plate being provided above the outlet of the centrally arranged line in the lower spherical end. With this impingement plate, rapid and uniform distribution of the hydrogenation gas from the cross-section of the feed line to the very much larger cylindrical reactor cross-section is achieved and, at the same time sedimentation of the finely disperse coal is prevented.

Abstract: 1407281 Mixing and emulsifying liquids BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 13 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 47272/72 Heading B1C In a method of making mixtures or emulsions of first and second liquids which differ widely in their density or volume ratio, one or more jets of a dispersing agent are injected at a velocity of 5-100 cu/s into a mass of the second liquid, the first liquid is introduced in the proximity of the jet, and the streams flow into an impulse exchange chamber which has a length of 2-30 times its average hydraulic diameter, which is 2-20 times the diameter of a circular nozzle of cross-sectional area equal to the sum of that of all the jet nozzles. The dispersing agent may be identical to the second liquid. In the apparatus of Fig. 1 dispersing agent from nozzle 1 and a first liquid from the annular nozzle 2 are injected into a mass of the second liquid in container 4 and are mixed in a mixing tube 2 which provides the impulse exchange chamber. In another arrangement, (Fig. 2, not shown) second liquid is continuously supplied to the container 4 and the impulse exchange chamber 3 forms the outlet conduit thereof. Examples relate to the mixing of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, the dispersion of metallic mercury in water, and to making an emulsion of paraffin oil and water with sodium lauryl sulphate as the dispersing agent.
