    Abstract: Expandable finely-particled synthetic resin material comprises a styrene polymer and an expanding agent wherein the particles are coated with 0.005 to 0.5% by weight (with reference to the material) of a polymer containing an hydrophilic group and having a softening point more than 30 DEG C. The styrene polymer may be polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene with one or more other a ,b -unsaturated polymerizable compounds containing at least 50% by weight of styrene units. The expanding agent may be normally gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons or halo-hydrocarbons which do not dissolve the styrene polymers and whose boiling-points are below the softening points of the polymers, e.g. propane, butane, pentane, hexane, cyclohexane, dichlorodifluoromethane or trifluorochloromethane. The preferred amount of expanding agent is 2 to 10% by weight of the styrene polymer. The preferred amount of hydrophilic polymer is 0.01 to 0.1% by weight and it may be a polymerizate, polycondensate or polyadduct containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino, amido or ether groups, e.g. a condensation product of hexanetriol and phthalic acid, alkaline condensation product of methylcyclohexanone, condensation product of glycerine and an adduct of acrylic acid to colophony or a condensation product of dipropylene triamine and an adduct of acrylic acid to colophony. The synthetic resin material may be coated by applying a solution of the hydrophilic polymer to a finely-particled styrene polymer containing expanding agent and then evaporating the solvent.

Particulate expandable styrene polymers are produced by polymerizing styrene with or without one or more olefinically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable compounds in aqueous suspension in the presence of an expanding agent and 0À001 to 1% by weight on the monomers of a water-insoluble polymer of a vinyl ester, vinyl ether, acrylic ester or methacrylic ester of molecular weight 10 4 to 10 6 which will dissolve in the monomers and which is not homogeneously miscible with the styrene polymers obtained. In examples styrene, with optionally acrylonitrile, was polymerized in an aqueous mixture of a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and methyl acrylate, sodium pyrophosphate, benzoyl peroxide; pentane, hexane, butane and/or dichlorofluoromethane; and either polyvinyl isobutyl ether, polymethyl acrylate or methacrylate, poly-2-ethylhexyl acrylate, polyvinyl acetate, a butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethyl acrylate or polyvinyl propionate.
