Abstract: Preparation of at least one partial oxidation and/or ammoxidation product of a hydrocarbon involves partially dehydrogenating at least one saturated hydrocarbon under heterogeneous catalysis and using the resulting product gas mixture for heterogeneously catalyzed partial oxidation and/or ammoxidation of the partially dehydrogenated hydrocarbon present in the product gas mixture. Preparation of at least one partial oxidation and/or ammoxidation product of a hydrocarbon involves: (a) dehydrogenating a saturated hydrocarbon (preferably propane or isobutene) using a heterogeneous catalyst in the gas phase to form a product gas mixture, comprising one or more partially dehydrogenated hydrocarbon, leaving constituents present in the product gas mixture, other than the saturated hydrocarbon and the partially dehydrogenated hydrocarbon; or partly or fully removing them to obtain a product gas mixture; and (b) partial oxidizing and/or ammoxidizing the product gas mixtures using one or more heterogeneous catalyst. The method includes at least one mechanical separation operation so that solid particles present in the gas mixtures can be removed.

Abstract: Production of methacrylic acid from isobutane comprises partial dehydrogenation of isobutane, separation of isobutane and isobutene and catalyzed partial oxidation of isobutene with molecular oxygen in the gas phase to form a methacrolein containing product mixture. A process for the production of methacrylic acid from isobutane comprises: (A) partial, selective, heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of isobutane in the gas phase in a reaction zone (A) to form a mixture of isobutene and unreacted isobutane; (B) transport of the gas mixture to a reaction zone (B) followed by a selective heterogeneously catalyzed partial oxidation with molecular oxygen in the gas phase to form a methacrolein containing product mixture whereby the molar conversion of isobutene is at least 95 mol.% (C) the methacrolein containing product mixture from (B) is transferred to a reaction zone (C), without separation of the components, to undergo a selective heterogeneously catalyzed partial oxidation with molecular oxygen in the gas phase to form a methacrylic acid containing product mixture and is characterized in that components in the reaction mixture from (A) other than isobutane and isobutene are separated off to at least 80 mol.% and that the molar ratio of molecular oxygen to molecular nitrogen in reaction zone (B) is 1:1-1:10.

Production of a catalyst with support having ring geometry and shell of catalytically-active oxide of formula (I), containing molybdenum (Mo), bismuth (Bi), iron (Fe) plus cobalt (Co) and/or nickel (Ni) and optionally other elements, by producing intimate dry mixture of starting materials for (I), thermal treatment at 150-350 deg C to give precursor mass, moistening support with water, contacting it with this mass to form coating, drying and calcination at 400-600 deg C. X = cobalt (Co) and/or nickel (Ni); X = silicon (Si) and/or aluminum (Al); X = lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), cesium (Cs) and/or rubidium (Rb); a = 0.2-1; b = 2-10; c = 0.5-10; d = 0-10; e = 0-0.5; y = value giving neutral charge, depending on valency and frequency of elements other than oxygen (O). An Independent claim is also included for catalysts produced in this way.
