    Abstract: 1,153,897. Phthalocyanine pigments. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK A.G. 29 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965; 9 April, 1966(2)], No. 43577/66. Heading C4P. Crude polyhalo-copper phthalocyanines are converted into yellowish-green pigments by treatment with sulphuric acid and an organic liquid, as hereinafter defined, in the presence of 0À1 to 2À0 parts by weight of nitroxylsulphuric acid (or the corresponding amount of a salt of nitrous acid), or of 0À1 to 0À3 part by weight of 100% nitric acid per one part by weight of dye. The organic liquid is defined as any organic solvent, liquid at the working temperatures, which is not attacked by nitroxylsulphuric acid. Specified organic liquids are di- and trichlorobenzenes, nitrobenzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and napththalene. The nitroxylsulphuric and nitric acids may be formed in situ by the addition of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal nitrates or nitrites to the conversion mixture. Mixtures of the nitric acid, nitroxylsulphuric acid and nitrite may also be used.

Copper phthalocyanines are prepared by reacting together at temperatures up to 220‹ C. a phthalodinitrile, e.g. tetrachlorophthalodinitrile; a copper salt, e.g. sulphate, acetate or chloride; an inert solvent, e.g. chlorobenzenes, nitrobenzenes and C 8 , C 9 and C 12 aliphatic alcohols; a nitrogen base, e.g. ammonia and tertiary aromatic bases such as pyridine and quinoline; and as a catalyst material a compound, e.g. an oxide, oxyacid or a salt thereof, a halide or carbonyl compound of an element having an atomic number of 22-24, 26-28, 30, 32-34, or 40-42. A large excess of nitrogen base may replace the solvent.

    Abstract: Formulations of flavanthrone, pyranthrone, indanthrone, indigo, quinacridone, perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide pigments which contain, as additives, one or more compounds of the formula (I) where X is an n-valent radical of a flavanthrone, pyranthrone, indigo, quinacridone, perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride or perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide pigment, R1, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or chlorine, R2 is hydrogen, chlorine, carboxyl, bromine, nitro, N-C1-C5-alkylcarbamyl, N-phenylcarbamyl or benzoylamino and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4. In solutions of surface-coating binders or of surface coatings, the above formulations give very deep colorations, coupled with high gloss and high transparency of the resulting films.
