Abstract: 1,166,290. Self-extinguishing thermoplastic compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 29 Dec., 1966 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 58124/66. Headings C3C and C3P. A self-extinguishing thermoplastic composition having a bromine content of at least 0.1% by wt. consists of a thermoplastic polymer which contains more than 50% by wt. of styrene or a nuclear alkyl-substituted styrene and a polymer of butadiene and/or isoprene which has at least 50% of its base units combined by 1,2-linkages and which is brominated to a content of 40-75% by wt. of bromine. The styrene polymer may be polystyrene. In an example, a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile was polymerized in an aq. mixture of benzoyl peroxide, barium sulphate and the brominated polyisoprene. In comparative examples brominated polymers of butadiene and isoprene having 1,4-linkages were used. Porous polymers are produced in the examples by polymerizing styrene in an aq. mixture of (A) polyvinylpyrrolidone and sodium pyrophosphate; (B) barium sulphate; or (C) a copolymer of N-vinyl-pyrrolidone and methyl acrylate, sodium pyrophosphate and a polymer of diisopropylbenzene; and pentane, benzoyl peroxide and the brominated polybutadiene and the polystyrene beads produced are preexpanded in steam and then formed into blocks by further steam treatment.

Abstract: A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic homopolymer or copolymer of styrene which may be substituted by alkyl groups in the nucleus or side chain and which contains more than 50% by wt. of styrene or the substituted styrene having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to the carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0.1-5%, and (c) 0.01-5% of (a) of a compound of formula where RA and RB are a phenyl radical which may be substituted by at least one C1- 3 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C1- 4 alkoxy radical, Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are H, Cl, Br, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or cyclohexyl; R3 and R4 are Cl, Br, cyano, nitro, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or phenyl. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene and/or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Compound (c) may be 2,3-diethyl - 2,3 - diphenylbutane; 2,2,3,3 - tetraphenylbutane or 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - di - p - tolylbutane. The bromide (b) may be hexabromododecane, tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl)-phosphate or tetrabromoethane. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane, and may be formed into a foamed sheet.
