Abstract: A process for carrying out exothermic reactions comprises (a) addition reaction of an organomagnesium halide of formula RMgX with a carbonyl compound; and (b) hydrolysis of the addition product in a solvent or solvent mixture, in which much of the heat liberated in the reaction is removed by evaporation of the solvent. R = 1-6C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, or aryl; X = Cl, Br or I.
