    Abstract: 1,131,459. Spray-producers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 28 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec, 1964], No. 54909/65. Heading B2F. Apparatus suitable for spraying molten thermoplastic materials comprises a gas nozzle 10 provided with an outlet 16, a gas feed pipe 11 connected tangentially to the nozzle 10 so as to produce a whirling stream of gas, and a feed tube 4 for the spray material formed at its generally conical lower end with a ring of apertures 14 through which the material is supplied to the whirling gas stream. The apertures are formed substantially perpendicular to the tapered surface 19 of the lower end of the tube 4. The material within the tube 4 is heated by an internal heating device 7 and an external electrical heating device 8, the temperature of the devices being controlled by thermocouples 6 and 2 respectively. The outlet 16 is provided with a sharp edge 21 and an insulating sleeve 9 is located around the device 8. A plate 12 containing the oulet 16 is adjustable towards the surface 19.

    Abstract: Thermoplastic synthetic resin powders are prepared by extruding the molten resin through a plurality of orifices to form strands and breaking up the strands to a powder by means of gas stream blown at a velocity of at least 100/m./sec. on to the strands as they are extruded from the orifices and in a direction perpendicular to the direction of extrusion, the flow velocity of the gas not being allowed to decrease in the region of the orifices. Specified resins are polyamides, e.g. polycaprolactam, polylaurolactam and polycapryllactam and dicarboxlic acid/diamine condensates such as those derived from adipic and sebacic acids and hexamethylenediamine, octamethylenediamine and 2,2 - (4,41 - diaminocyclohexyl) propane; and polymers of olefins, styrene, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, conjugated diolefins, vinyl chloride and tetrafluoroethylene. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated, and examples describe the preparation of powders from (1-3) "high pressure" polyethylene, (4) polylaurolactam, (5) polystyrene, (6) anethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (7) an ethylene/n-butyl acrylate copolymer and (8) "low pressure" polyethylene.

Apparatus for slitting a plastics sheet wound on a spool 55, Fig. 1, into a number of strips, e.g. as recording tape, which is drawn off on to take-up spools 119 comprises a cutter head 52 in which cutters 51, Fig. 2, e.g. razor blades, are clamped together between plates 29 ... 31, Fig. 6, the head being secured to a swinging arm 60 and driven by a motor via an eccentric and connecting rod. A co-operating grooved roller 53 is mounted in bearings on an eccentrically displaced shaft 39 secured on a swinging arm 2, so that it may move backwards and forwards in an arc, and is swung in, by a lever 44, for cutting to commence. A lever 7 effects the cutting movement of the grooved roller, and a lever 12 the swinging movement of the cutter 54 head, the levers being controlled by a disc 14 carrying push-rods 15, 16 in a double eccentric arrangement, driven by a pulley 21. The oscillations of the grooved roller are 90 degrees out of phase with those of the cutter head, so that the cutters in operation move in an endless curve in continuous relative movement with respect to the sheet being slit, so that the point of cutting on the cutting edge is continuously being changed. The take-up apparatus for the spools 119 comprises a hollow shaft 121, Fig. 5, and a main shaft 101 arranged so that when the thickness of the tape to be severed is constant the shafts run at the same speed, but may be compensated for different thicknesses of tape by changing the speed. Both shafts are driven by a pulley 101 via clutches 108a, 108b by belt drive from a variable-speed motor. Up to four tapes may be wound simultaneously on each shaft. The tape is cleaned before being wound up, by duster rollers, blowing or suction.

    Abstract: In a process for the production of structural members based on metal and polyamide, the pores and the surface of a porous shaped article of sintered metal are completely or partly filled up and covered with a polymerization mixture comprising a lactam, an alkaline polymerization catalyst and a catalyst activator and polymerization effected. The polymerization may be effected in a mould. Specified sintered metals are steel and steel alloys, e.g. chromium nickel steel, bronze, and brass alloys. Specified lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, caprolactam, capryllactam, oenantholactam, capric lactam, laurolactam, E-methyl-E-caprolactam, Z - ethyl - Z - oenantholactam and methylene-bis-caprolactam. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and basic compounds thereof. Specified activators are substituted ureas, guanidines, urethanes and N-cyanolactams. The examples describe the polymerization of caprolactam in a mould in the presence of sodium and bis-(caprolactam carboxylic acid)hexamethylene diamide, the sintered metal being:-(1) two chromium-nickel-steel plates and (2) a metal plate. Composite objects which may be made by the process of the invention are bearings, gears, bushings, slides, piston rings, commutator discs and shafts and armature spirals and shafts.
