Abstract: Shear-resistant aqueous copolymer emulsions which can be used for sizing paper are manufactured by first copolymerizing, in the aqueous phase of an aqueous emulsion, using conventional polymerization initiators which form free radicals, (A) from 0.5 to 15 per cent by weight of monomers containing a polymerizable C=C bond and at least one carboxyl and/or sulfonic acid or phosphate or phosphite group with (B) from 5 to 30 per cent by weight of monomers containing a C=C bond and a tertiary or quaternary amino group, or a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group, and then adding, while continuing the copolymerization, (C) from 0 to 94.5 per cent by weight of styrene and/or acrylonitrile and (D) from 0 to 94.5 per cent by weight of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters of alkanols of 1 to 8 carbon atoms as well as (E) from 0 to 30 per cent by weight of further olefinically unsaturated monomers, and completing the polymerization, the pH during the polymerization being less than 7 and the amount of monomers (C) and (D) together being at least 25 per cent by weight.

Abstract: Amphoteric copolymers (I) with a mol. wt. of 500-5000 are prepd. by continuous bulk polymerisation of 1 mol. N-contg. monomer (I) with an amino and/or quaternary amino gp., 1.5-10 mol. (w.r.t. 1 mol. (I) nonionic, hydrophobic, ethylenically unsatd. monomer (II) and 0.5-1.5 mol. (w.r.t. to 1 mol. (I) ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid (III) at 180-400 deg.C and above 1 bar in the absence of regulators. (I) is pref. of formula CH2:CR3C(O)A-B-NR1R2 (where A is O or NH; B is CnH2n; n is 1-8; R1 and R2 are CmH2m+1, m is 1-4 and R3 is H or Me). (II) is (alpha-methyl) styrene, methacrylates of 1-8C alcohols and/or acrylonitrile. (III) is (meth)acrylic acid and/or maleic anhydride. (I) are emulsifiers and can be used in the prepn. of aq. polymer dispersions and esp. (surface) sizes for paper.

Abstract: Prepn. of shear-stable aq. copolymer dispersions for use as paper sizes, by copolymerisation of (A) 0.5-15 wt. % monomer contg. a COOH and/or SO3H, phosphate or phosphite gp., with (B) 5-30% monomer contg. a tert. or quaternary amino gp. or N-contg. heterocyclic gp., in aq. phase, followed by further polymerisation with (C) 0-94.5% styrene and/or acrylonitrile, (D) 0-94.5% (meth)acrylate ester of a 1-8C alkanol and (E) 0-30% further olefinic-unsatd. monomers. During polymerisation, the pH is 7, and amt. of (C) plus (D) is >=25%. Use of dispersions as above, from 25-80% (C), and 25-64.5% (D), with the pH adjusted to over 7 after polymerisation, in combination with optical brighteners and/or starches and/or an anionic polymer soln. or dispersion, for pulp or surface sizing of paper. Alkaline sizes do not adversely affect the action of optical brighteners, are compatible with all types of starch and can be mixed in any ratio with anionic solns. or dispersions, e.g. those based on styrene and maleic anhydride and/or (meth)acrylic acid.

Abstract: Anionic paper sizing agents comprise a water-sol. salt of a copolymer of (a) 30-80 wt.% of a 2-12C olefin with terminal double bonds, or vinyl ether; (b) 2-35 wt. % (meth)acrylic acid and (c) 5-35 wt. % maleic acid or -anhydride, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, vinyl phosphonic acid and vinyl lactic acid, with a mol wt. of 600-5000 and made by continuous copolymsn. of the monomers (a), (b) and (c) at 130-320 degrees C and pressures of >1 bar. Used esp. as are made at the required low mol. wt. without using wide pH range, and due to the lack of regulator and initiator residues, are more thermally stable than prior art materials of this type, so that the treated paper can be dried at elevated temps. without discolouration.

Abstract: Surface sizing of paper is effected by applying an aqs. soln. contg 20-80 wt. % copolymer to the surface of the paper the copolymer opt. being in salt form. The copolymer is prepd. by copolymerising (a) 70-90 wt. % 2-12C alpha-olefinically unsated. monomers, and (b) 30-10 wt. % monoolefinically unsatd. monomers, and (b) 30-10 wt. % protonated tertiary, or quaternary N atom, in a 1-5C alkanol, in the presence of a free radical initiator. When (b) contains a tertiary N atom, the copolymer is neutralised with a 1-5c aliphatic carboxylic acid. Copolymsn. is effected to give a copolymer having 1T value of 20-60. The copolymer is prepd. by soln. polymsn. of the monomers in an org. solvent in which >=5 wt. % water dissolves at 20 degrees C. Extension of the range of solvents usable for polymsn. The sized papers show satisfactory properties even when contg. a high concn. of fillers.

Abstract: Paper-sizing compsn. is based on an aq. soln. of an aq. soln. of a salt of copolymer contg., by wt., (a) 30-80 (50-70) % 2-12 C olefins having terminal double bond, acrylate, methacrylate, vinyl ether, and (meth)acrylonitrile, (b) 10-35 (20-30)% (meth)acrylic acid and (c) 5-35 (10-20) % maleic anhydride, maleic-, fumaric-, itaconic- and vinyl-phosphonic acid. Copolymer has K-value 18-40. Used for papers of any thickness and type, including sulphite or sulphate cardboard. Sizing activity is independent of alum content and pH of paper to be sized and the size is compatible with fillers.
