Abstract: In a surface sizing process, paper is treated with an aq. soln. of (a) a water-sol. salt of an anionic synthetic size, and (b) a modified starch obtd. by heating starch with water-sol. cationic polymers or condensates in presence of water, at above the gelatinisation temp. of the starch. A soln. of the modified starch is mixed with the synthetic sizing agent, opt. also as a soln., to give a sizing soln. contg. 0.5-8 (3-6) wt. % modified starch and 0.3-5 (1-2) wt. % anionic synthetic size. The compsn. may be applied to the paper in the sizing press, or by spraying, impregnation or casting, or during calandering. The size compsn. is stable. Sizing is in absence of alum and/or Na aluminate.

Abstract: The sizing material is based on anionic polymer consisting of (A) 10-60 wt. % of a soln. copolymer of 30-90 wt. % copolymerisable ethylenic unsatd. hydrocarbon cpd., vinyl ether, acrylic acid- or methacrylic acid ester and 70-10 wt. % maleic acid anhydride and or ethylenic unsatd. 3-5C carboxylic acid. To this in aq. alkaline soln., which contains =60 wt. % dispersed copolymer constituents and =50 wt. % of an H2O miscible organic solvent, are grafted (B) 90-40 wt. % (w.r.t. the mixt. of A and B) of a mixt. of ethylenic unsatd. copolymerisable (with each other) monomers. (B) components, polymerised alone form hydrophobic copolymers with a Glass temp. between +60 degrees and -40 degrees C. Dispersion with very high solids content and relatively low viscosity, a very high size gloss stability and alkali stability are obtd. They are used primarily in paper production.

Abstract: 1. A finely divided polymer dispersion which contains polymerized units of nitrogen-containing monomers, and is obtained by a two-stage polymerization reaction, wherein, in the first polymerization stage, a low molecular weight prepolymer, which has a viscosity of from 1.06 to 1.40 (measured in an Ubbelohde viscometer) in a 1% strength solution of a mixture of 99 parts by weight of dimethyl formamide and 1 part by weight of glacial acetic acid at 20 degrees C, is prepared in a water-miscible solvent, which may contain up to 15% by weight of water, in the manner of a solution copolymerization from a monomer mixture which contains (a) per mole of a nitrogen-containing monomer of the formula see diagramm : EP0051144,P13,F1 or see diagramm : EP0051144,P13,F3 where A is O or NH, B is Cn H2n , n being from 1 to 8, R**1 and R**2 are each Cm H2m+1 , m being from 1 to 4, R**3 is H or CH3 , X4 **- is OH**- , Cl**- , Br**- or CH3 -OSO3 H**- , and R**4 is Cm H2m+1 , m being from 1 to 4, (b) 2.5 to 10 moles of at least one nonionic, hydrophobic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer which, if it is polymerized on its own, forms a hydrophobic polymer, (c) 0.5 to 1.5 moles of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or maleic anhydride, and (d) 0 to 7 moles of a nonionic, hydrophilic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the solution of the prepolymer is diluted with water in a weight ratio of from 1:3 to 1:50 and, in the second polymerization stage, 1 to 32 parts by weight of at least one nonionic, hydrophobic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer, which is the same as monomer (b) of the prepolymer, are polymerized per part by weight of the solution polymer in this polymer solution in the manner of an emulsion polymerization in the presence of a usual amount of a water-soluble polymerization initiator.

Abstract: Cationic aq. copolymer dispersions useful in coatings for paper, leather and textiles are prepd. by emulsion co-polymerising a mixt. of olefinically unsatd. monomers in the presence of a 5-30 wt% aq. soln. or dispersion of a co-polymer of (a) 70-90 wt% styrene and/or a (meth)acrylic ester of a 1-8C alkanol, opt. together with acrylonitrile, and (b) 10-30 wt% monoolefinically unsatd. monomers having tertiary, protonated tertiary or quaternary N atoms, this copolymer having a IT value of 20-60, and the soln./dispersion opt. contg. up to 20 wt% water soluble org. solvent. The monomer mixt. consists of (c) an acrylic ester of a 1-8C alkanol and/or butadiene, (d) styrene, acrylonitrile and/or methyl methacrylate, and (e) 0-10 wt%, based on total monomers, of an alpha, beta-monoolefinically unsatd. 3-5C mono- or dicarboxylic acid, a water soluble salt of these acids, and/or an amide of these acids, this amide being opt. substd. by N-methylol or N-alkoxymethyl gps. on its N atom. The total amt. of monomers (c), (d) and (e) is 1-10 pts. wt. per 1 pt. wt. of the copolymer derived from (ae and (b), and the amts. of (c), (d) and (e) are selected to give a copolymer having a glass transition temp. of -15 to +60 degrees C.

Abstract: Monomer mixts. contg., by wt., (A) 30-80 % mono-vinyl aromatics, (B) 70-20 % acrylic acid, methyacrylic acid, their esters with 1-18C alcohols, maleic anhydride, maleic-,: fumaric-, itaconic-, vinyl phosphonic- and/or vinyl lactic acid, (C) 0-20 % acrylamide, methacrylamide and/or maleimide and (D) 0-10 % copolymerisable cpd. contg. at least 2 ethylenically unsaturated double bonds, are copolymerised continuously, without polymerisation initiators, at 200-400 deg.C.. Pressures above 1 bar are used, under periodic pressure fluctuations with a pressure difference of 15-100 bar and a pressure fluctuation frequency of 6-300/hr. Copolymer use for (i) sizing paper surfaces, (ii) fixing pigments, flame-retardants, optical brighteners and dyestuffs and (iii) coating concrete and wood, is claimed. Water-proofing of surfaces and fixing of organic and/or inorganic additives can take place simultaneously. E.g. paper can be sized and finished with pigments.
