    Abstract: A process for the production of 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyaryl)-oxindole compounds (I) having an APHA color number of less than 20 Hazens comprises preparation of crude (I) with a purity of at least 90 % and purification of the crude product by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid or ethanol with addition of an oxidizing or reducing agent, optionally in the presence of activated carbon. A process for the production of 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyaryl)-oxindole compounds (I) having an APHA color number of less than 20 Hazens comprises: (A) preparation of crude 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyaryl)-oxindole with a purity of at least 90 %; and (B) purification of the crude product by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid or ethanol with addition of an oxidizing or reducing agent, optionally in the presence of activated carbon. Independent claims are included for: (i) 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyaryl)-oxindole having an APHA number of less than 20, preferably of no greater than 7 Hazens; (ii) a branched polycarbonate containing 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyaryl)-oxindole compounds (I); and (iii) a process for the purification of crude 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxyaryl)-oxindole with a purity of at least 90 % by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid or ethanol with addition of an oxidizing or reducing agent, optionally in the presence of activated carbon.
