Abstract: Use of carboxylic acid semi-esters or semi-amides of formula R1-(Xn-CO-Xm-A-)p-COOH (I) (where R1 is satd. 8-30C alkyl; X is -O- or -NR2-; R2 is H, Me, Et, C3H7 or R1; A is a bifunctional 1-12C hydrocarbyl gp.; n,m are 0 or 1 and p is 1 or 2) as sizing agents for paper and cardboard is claimed. (I) can be used for engine- or surface-sizing and can replace colophony rosin, in part or completely. (I) is free from quality fluctuation problems of natural prods.
