Abstract: Prodn. of water-in-oil emulsifiers (I) comprises first reacting opt. unsatd. 10-22C fatty alcohol (or mixts.) with epichlorohydrin at mole ratio 1:0.5-1.5 to give a glycidyl ether. This is then reacted with amines of formula R1R2R3N (II) in presence of acids or bases at mole ratio 1:0.1-6. (R1 and R2 are each H or 2-4C hydroxyalkyl and R3 = 2-4C hydroxyalkyl, or -(CH2)m- -Y-(CH2)m'- nX in which case R1=R2=H. Y = O or NH; and m and m' = 2 or 3; n = 0-6 and X = NH2 or OH). Used esp. in the cosmetic industry, (I) are at least as good as the fatty alcohol monoether emulsifiers of the parent patent, can be be used for all applications and are stable towards all likely chemical influences.
