    Abstract: In a process for the production of alkali metal disulphite (M2 S2 O5) where M is an alkali metal wherein aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, and/or carbonate solution is reacted with sulphur dioxide, and disulphite is separated from the mother liquor, alkali metal hydroxide and/or carbonate is added to the mother liquor to precipitate metal ions (other than alkali metal ions) and sulphate ions, and after separating the precipitate the liquid is reacted with further sulphur dioxide for the production of further alkali metal disulphite. Sufficient alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate is added to bring the pH to between 7 and 12. In an example potassium hydroxide is added to a solution of crude potassium disulphite containing iron and potassium sulphate, and after removing the resulting precipitate the solution is reacted with sulphur dioxide.

    Abstract: Apparatus for separating solid substances from solutions and especially for crystallizing, comprises a container 1 filled with liquid to be treated in which is immersed a rotating hollow cylinder 4 through which a cooling (or heating) medium is passed, the cylinder 4 having a polished outer wall, and a blade stirrer 5 or a second hollow cylinder, rotating in the opposite direction to cylinder 4, to prevent solid substances such as crystals settling on cylinder 4.     Abstract: Solutions of alkali metal or ammonium sulphites and/or bisulphites are prepared by reacting a finely-dispersed alkaline solution of alkali metal or ammonium hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates singly or in admixture with or without alkali metal or ammonium sulphites, with a co-current stream of sulphur dioxide containing gas moving at 1-120 m./sec. for a maximum of 10 sec. and thereafter separating the solution from the gas stream. The alkaline solution may be dispersed in a Venturi tube or axially into a fan. The concentration of the initial solutions is such that no deposition of solids occurs during the reaction. All examples refer to sodium sulphite and bisulphite.

    Abstract: Finely-dispersed, white, potassium or sodium sulphite is obtained by precipitation from a solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide and potassium or sodium hydrogen sulphite in the presence of an excess of 12% of hydroxide over the stoichiometric amount necessary. Impurities such as iron thus remain in solution and can be separated with the mother liquor. The average residence period of the sulphite crystals in the precipitation vessel is preferably at least 15 minutes thus ensuring easy filtration of the crystals. Neutralization of the excess hydroxide is effected by solution of weak acids, preferably with potassium or sodium hydrogen sulphite.
