Abstract: Moist salts which form a higher hydrate below a hydration conversion temperature are suspended in a current of air or inert gas and cooled therein at least to the conversion temperature, whereby the free water is taken up in the formation of the higher hydrate. The operation is preferably effected in a fluidized bed. Examples refer to the production of hydrates of sodium sulphate and sulphite from the moist salts by treatment with air in a fluidized bed. Reference is also made to sodium thiosulphate, carbonate, phosphate and sulphide, ferrous sulphate, ferric chloride, magnesium chloride, bromide and sulphate, calcium chloride and nitrate and sulphates of manganese, cadmium, uranium, zinc and copper.

Abstract: Potassium metabisulphite is prepared by reacting SO2 with KOH and/or K2CO3. The reactants, i.e. SO2 (or SO2 containing gas) and aqueous K2CO3 of 15% by weight minimum concentration are introduced into an aqueous solution, substantially saturated with K2SO3 and KHSO3 at the reaction temperature and which may already contain solid K2S2O5, at a pH

Abstract: Anhydrous sodium sulphite, of grain size 0.09-0.75 mm. is prepared by heating sodium sulphite heptahydrate to split off the water of crystallisation, and separating the anhydrous sodium sulphite from the resulting aqueous suspension. The heating is carried out in at least two stages, the temperature in the first stage being maintained at 33.4 DEG C. to 40 DEG C., and increasing temperatures being maintained in the subsequent stage or stages, such that in the final stage a temperature of 90 DEG C. to 103 DEG C. is maintained. The residence times in the various stages are so adjusted that the desired grain size is obtained. The process may be carried out in continuous fashion by continuously supplying the sodium sulphite dry, moist or in aqueous suspension to the first stage and allowing the resulting liquid to flow through the following stages.

Abstract: Free-flowing anhydrous sodium sulphate is produced from solutions containing sodium hydrogen sulphate, which have been obtained in the production of hydroxylamine, by neutralizing with sodium hydroxide, separating sodium sulphate decahydrate from the solution, melting the decahydrate in the presence of SO2 and/or a compound which forms SO2 on heating to at least the fusion temperature of the decahydrate, separating the deposited anhydrous (free from water of crystallization) sodium sulphate, and drying. A sulphur-dioxide-forming compound may be added to the decahydrate before, during, or after melting. In an example, sodium hydrogen sulphite solution obtained by dissolving sodium pyrosulphite in water is added with the sodium sulphate decahydrate to a vessel heated to about 90 DEG C. to effect melting. Alternatively, solid sodium pyrosulphite may be employed.
