Abstract: Prodn. of methylamines comprises subjecting prim or sec. mono- or polyamines to reductive N-methylation with HCHO and H2 on a fixed bed of catalyst contg. Co or Ni in reduced form. The catalyst is first used in a conventional hydrogenation (pref. of nitrile to amine) or amination (pref. of alcohol with NH3 in presence of H2) process. N-Methyl tert mono- and polyamines are used as absorbents for removing acid components from synthesis gas, as catalysts for the prepn. of polyurethanes, epoxy resins and polyamides, as detergent additives for oils and fuels, as selective solvents, and as textile assistants. Carrying out prior hydrogenation or amination with the catalyst reduces catalyst consumption during reductive methylation.

Abstract: The essentially carrier free catalyst is based on phosphoric acid contg. mixts. of Co, Cu and Mn with an additional content of molybdic acid or molybdenum oxide. The Mo component gives the catalyst a longer life and enables reactions to be carried out at lower temps. with a higher reaction velocity. The catalyst contains 0.5-5 wt% Mo. calc. as trioxide and is used for the hydrogenation of mono- or polyvalent, pref. aliphatic 1-20C carboxylic acids to the corresponding alcohols at 225 degrees C and an H2 press >=100 bar.
