Abstract: The invention comprises substituted quinazolines having the general formula in which either R denotes a linear or branched C1- 4 alkyl or alkenyl group which bears a chlorine atom, a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group as a substituent and R1 denotes a hydrogen atom or R denotes a linear or branched lower alkyl or alkenyl group which may bear a chlorine atom, a hydroxyl group or an alkoxy group as a substituent and R1 denotes the group (CO)n-A in which n is 0 or 1, and A denotes a linear or branched alkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl group which may bear chlorine atoms, methyl or phenoxy groups as substituents, or a phenyl group which may bear chlorine or bromine atoms, or nitro groups as substituents. 1 - acetyl - 3 - isopropyl - 2,4 - dioxotetrahydroquinazoline and 1 - methyl - 3 - isopropyl - 2,4 - dioxotetrahydroquinazoline are claimed per se and many others are specified. General methods of preparation are listed (with literature references) and two worked examples are provided describing the preparation of 1-butyl-3-propyl- and 1 - ethyl 3 - isopropyl - 2,4 - dioxotetrahydroquinazoline by reaction of butyryl chloride and ethyl iodide with the corresponding 1-unsubstituted compounds.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise compounds having the formula in which R denotes a linear or branded lower alkyl or alkenyl group which may bear a chlorine atom, a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group as a substituent and R1 denotes a hydrogen atom or the group -(CO)n-A in which n denotes one of the numbers 0 and 1 and A denotes a linear or branched alkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl group which may bear chlorine atoms, methyl or phenoxy groups as substituents, or a phenyl group which may bear chlorine or bromine atoms or nitro groups as substituents. In admixture with conventional solid or liquid extenders, solvents, emulsifying agents, dispersing agents or other assistants. Insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, other herbicides and fertilisers may also be admixed.
