Abstract: The pile of pile fabrics, e.g. carpets, velvet, plush, cord and velveteen, derived for example from natural or regenerated cellulose fibres, wool, silk, cellulose ester, polyamide, polyester and acrylonitrile polymer fibres, is secured by treating the reverse side of the fabrics with dispersions of copolymers derived from 1-25% by weight of an N-methylolamide of an acrylic acid that may be etherified and 99-75% by weight of one or more other polymerizable compounds and subjecting the fabrics to a heat treatment at a temperature above 100 DEG C. In addition to the N-methylolamide of an acrylic acid or ether thereof the copolymer may also comprise other unsaturated carboxylic acid amides, derivatives of these carboxylic amides which are mono substituted at the nitrogen atom and the methylol compounds of these amides, esters, nitriles and N-disubstituted amides of unsaturated carboxylic acids, vinyl esters, halides, cyanides, ethers, ketones and aromatics, vinylidene halides and cyanides, C-vinyl pyridine, N-vinyl compounds, e.g. N-vinyl imidazole, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam and N-vinyl pyridine, unsaturated aldehydes and esters of unsaturated alcohols, e.g. allyl and methallyl alcohols. The fabrics may be treated on the reverse side with aqueous dispersions of the copolymers having a concentration of 3-50% with reference to the weight of the liquor by coating or padding, dried at temperatures up to 100 DEG C. and then heat treated at temperatures above 100 DEG C. The dispersions may also contain thickeners, e.g. starch, cellulose and starch ethers, polyacrylic acids and their salts and salts of copolymers derived from acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, resin forming substances, e.g. tetramethylol acetone, dimethylol acetal, dimethylol urea, trimethylol melamine, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol glyoxal monoureine, dimethylol butane diol diurethane, dimethylol adipamide, dimethylol propylene urea, dimethylol alkyl triazones and ethers thereof and polyfunctional epoxy compounds such as glycol and diglycol diglycidyl ethers, in combination with hardening catalysts, organic and inorganic fillers and pigments, polyacrylamides, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl esters, polyvinyl alcohol, clay, kaolin, china clay, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron oxide, chromium oxide and substative dyes. The treatment may be carried out in conjunction with a padding impregnation with a water repellant comprising a metal salt/paraffin emulsion or silicone.

Abstract: Fibrous materials of cellulose, which may be mixed with other natural or man-made fibres, are simultaneously coloured and finished by treatment with (a) compounds which improve crease resistance, (b) copolymers of 1-25% of an N-methylolamide of an acrylic acid, and 99-75% of one or more other polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds, and (c) a dyestuff capable of forming a covalent linkage with the substance of the fibre. The process may be combined with a mechanical finishing operation, e.g. embossing, fluting or calendering, by subjecting the dried fabric to mechanical treatment at 140-200 DEG C. at pressures of 10-30 metric tons. The dyes (c) may be from the anthraquinone, azo, disazo, methine, azoporphin, oxazine and thiazine series, are preferably water-soluble and contain a reactive group, many of which are specified. Suitable dyes also include those containing methylol or etherified methylol groups preferably attached by way of nitrogen and which are applied together with an acid donor. Suitable components (a) are described in Specifications 882,743 and 916,698 and are especially the methylol compounds of glyoxalmonoureine, glyoxaldidureine, butanediol-diurethane and the alkyl derivatives of the triazinones. The copolymers (b) are prepared from monomer mixtures containing especially N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylolmethacrylamide and methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl acrylate by the method described in German Specification 1,047,431. Further copolymers are described in Specifications 882,743 and 916,698. The process may be effected by applying to the material an aqueous bath or printing paste containing (a), (b), (c), about 60-96% water and any other desired auxiliaries, thereafter drying at 80-160 DEG C., optionally mechanically finishing and thermofixing at 130-200 DEG C. No rinsing step is required. Specified fibrous materials are cotton, linen and viscose staple which may be mixed with wool, polyacrylonitrile and/or polyamide fibres. Examples are given. Specifications 846,505, 858,183 and 916,697 also are referred to.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersions for coating on fabrics to give iron-on materials comprise a polyolefin, an oxyethylated alkyl phenol and/or an oxyethylated aliphatic carboxylic acid amide as dispersing agent, and a polymer or copolymer of N-methylolacrylamide and/or N-methylolmethacrylamide, an acrylic ester, a methacrylic ester, a vinyl ester, and/or a vinyl halide, and optionally an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid or salt thereof. The polyolefins specified are the polymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene and/or isobutylene. Optional ingredients are thickening agents such as dextrin, starch and polyvinyl alcohol, and water-soluble urea-formaldehyde and melamineformaldehyde condensation products.
