    Abstract: 1434160 Polyacrylonitrile composite fibres BAYER AG 4 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 43097/74 Heading B5B Polyacrylonitrile composite fibres are made by dry-spinning two different polyaorylonitrile polymers in side-by-side arrangement from dimethyl formamide solution, stretching the fibre to at least three times its original length in hot water containing 12 to 30% dimethyl formamide, and drying under tension or partial shrinkage. The stretching may be carried out in one or two stages, and the fibres may be passed through a further bath of hot water containing 12 to 20% dimethyl formamide either after stretching or between the stretching stages. The two polymers may be in the ratio from 50 : 50 to 35 : 65 and contain at least 85% acrylonitrile. Other comonomers may be, e.g. methyl acrylate, methylacroylaminobenzenebenzenedisulphonimide, or sodium methallylsulphonate.

    Abstract: Acrylonitrile polymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile units are plasticized with 1 to 20% by weight of polymer of a plasticizer comprising an aryl ester of a C6-C18 aliphatic sulphonic acid or a mixture of a dialkyl phthalate having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in each alkyl group and either an aryl ester of an aliphatic sulphonic acid or a polyester derived from adipic acid and a diol (e.g. a C2-C8 aliphatic diol). The polymer may be a homopolymer or a copolymer, e.g. with methyl acrylate. The plasticized polymers are processed to form filaments, fibres or films. The plasticizer may be added to a solution of the polymer in a solvent such as dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide or dimethyl sulphone, from which the shaped products can then be formed; or the plasticizer may be admixed with the polymer before dissolution.
