    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve continuous reading durability and fading stability by incorporating a carrier material, and a light absorbing layer formed of a soluble mixture of a thermoplastic binder and a dye, and using specific soluble phenol- aldehyde co-condensate as the binder. CONSTITUTION: The optical recording medium comprises a carrier material, and a light absorbing layer formed of a soluble mixture of a thermoplastic binder and at least one type of dye. As the binder, a soluble phenol-aldehyde co-condensate having an average polymerization degree larger than 40 and containing 0.05 to 5% of unreacted phenol constituent is used. Since the polymer made of a novolac exhibits good compatibility with the dye, the absorbing layer can be made to a sufficiently thick layer by a spin coating method of easy treatment, and hence good signal to noise ratio is performed. The medium in which weather resistance and continuous reading durability of the dye-polymer layer are improved can be provided by the polymer.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To suppress a crystallization of a dye by using a phenol/aldehyde resin having a specific mean molecular weight soluble in an alcohol having a boiling point of a predetermined range as a thermoplastic binder of a light- absorbing layer, thereby improving a dye solubility and forming a higher density. CONSTITUTION: A phenol/aldehyde resin used for a carrier of the optical recording medium is obtained by a reaction of multifunctional phenol soluble in an alcohol having a lower boiling point than 200 deg.C with the formaldehyde. Its mean molecular weight is larger than 300. As the phenol, phenol itself or a compound represented by a formula is used solely or in the state of a mixture thereof. As the aldehyde, a formaldehyde, a formaldehyde decomposed compound, acetaldehyde, chlorinated acetaldehyde, acetal or semi-acetal is used. This resin exhibits a good compatibility with the dye. And the light-absorbing layer containing the dye and the resin is formed in a sufficient density to suppress a crystallization of the dye.
