Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain the auto-tracking with high accuracy by separating an incident luminous flux path completely from a reflected luminous flux path and therefore eliminating completely the effect of the so-called return light. CONSTITUTION:An incident luminous flux 3 containing polarized components orthogonal to each other transmits through a polarization separating means 52 and is separated into the 1st and 2nd polarized incident luminous fluxes 68 and 70 which are orthogonal to each other. These fluxes 68 and 70 are condensed at different positions on a recording medium 12 through a condenser lens 10 and reflected by the medium 12 to be separated into the 1st and 2nd polarized reflected luminous fluxes 72 and 74 which are orthogonal to each other. These fluxes 72 and 74 transmit again through the lens 10 and are put on each other in the form of a single reflected luminous flux 76 at a position different from the flux 3 in terms of space by the means 52. The flux 76 is separated again by a polarized beam splitter 54 and detected by the 1st and 2nd photodetectors 58 and 62. Thus a reproduction RF signal 44 is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate generating gap intervals and to hold stably a high coupling efficiency, by mounting a volume type diffraction grating or a relief type blazed diffraction grating on an optical waveguide through a low-refractive index layer formed with a prescribed thickness. CONSTITUTION:An optical waveguide 11 having a refractive index nf is formed on a substrate 10 having a refractive index ns, and a low-refractive index gap layer 12 which changes the thickness in accordance with the intensity distribution of an incident light and has a refractive index nh is formed on the optical waveguide 11, and a volume type diffraction grating 13 having a refractive index ng is formed on the layer 12. Respective refractive indexes satisfy the relation of nf>ng>nh. A parallel luminous flux is incident to the diffraction grating 13 from a light source through a lens system 15, and a diffraction angle thetaB is so selected that the propagation constant of a diffracted light is phase-matched to the guided propagation constant in the waveguide 11, and a thickness s(x) of the gap layer 12 is selected properly, thereby coupling about 100% incident light to the waveguide mode light. Thus, the formation of gap intervals is facilitated, and a high coupling efficiency is held stably.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the device and method for optical echo memory recording and reproduction which enable real-time recording and reproduction in a picosecond time area without being limited to an electronic operation speed. CONSTITUTION:At the time of recording, a means 5 which converts a spatial bit pattern into a time series by parallel-serial conversion prepares a time series light pulse data signal 6 to be recorded on an optical echo memory medium 7. At the time of reproduction, a means 9 which converts the time series signal into the spatial bit pattern by serial-parallel conversion and a detection means 11 are used to detect the time-series signal 8, reproduced from the optical echo medium 7, as a reproduction signal 10 of a spatial pattern.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the method and device for optical modulation for modulating light at a very high speed of picosecond or below by utilizing a phenomenon in which virtual charge polarization is generated transiently. CONSTITUTION:Transient space electric field generation by virtual excitation of a carrier by a quantum well structure is used. An optical refractive index anisotropy of the quantum well structure is excited through an electro-optical effect, and by this optical refractive index anisotropy, a polarized state of light for propagating the quantum well structure is varied. Wave functions 17, 18 of an electron-hole pair excited virtually become asymmetrical due to a static electric field applied to a semiconductor quantum well structure part, and a phenomenon in which virtual charge polarization is generated transiently is utilized.

One beam of two-beam passed through the medium 17 is detected by a light detecter 19, and the signal obtained by the light detector 19 is used to measure width of optical pulse.
