    Abstract: In a polarization-state converting apparatus for use as an optical isolator, an optical modulator and the like there are provided a waveguide comprising a magnetic semiconductor, a device- for applying a magnetic field to the waveguide in a first predetermined direction, a device for applying an electric field to the waveguide in a second predetermined direction, and a mode conversion is caused via electrooptic and magnetooptic effects due to the electric and magnetic fields to change the polarization state of light propagating through the waveguide. When used as an optical isolator, the optical isolation is performed compensating for degradation of the mode conversion rate due to a phase mismatch between light incident upon the waveguide and light emerging from the waveguide. When used as an optical modulator, the optical modulation of light emerging from the waveguide is performed by varying the electric field and an optical isolation function is effected while compensating for degradation of the mode conversion rate due to a phase mismatch between light incident upon the waveguide and light emerging from the waveguide.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To drive a micro machine on a substrate by laser beams without any electric circuit.     Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical data pulse train generating method which can generate the optical data pulse trains at a super-high speed and with no limitation by an electrical modulation speed. CONSTITUTION:An optical pulse 6 passes through a beam splitter 1 and is divided into plural diffracted beams by a diffraction grating 2. Then the diffracted beams are turned into the one-dimensional perallel beams by a collimator lens 3 and then made incident on a space modulator 4. The modulator 4 is divided into plural segments according to the number of information bits. Then only the transmitted beams reach a reflector 5 among those beams that are transmitted (bit 1) or cut off (bit 0) by the modulator 4. These transmitted beams are reflected on a stepped reflecting surface end the optical path difference, i.e., the time delay is caused between the beams at a fixed interval. Then these beams are condensed on the same optical path by a collimator lens 3 via the modulator 4. These condenced beams have the time delays at the fixed intervals end therefore a time series pulse train 7 is generated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the light data pulse train detecting method which can detect an ultrahigh speed light data pulse train in real time without being limited by an electric response speed. CONSTITUTION:Reference light pulses 1 and the light data pulse train 2 are made into sheet beams 6 and 7 through a collimator lens 3 and separated into an upper and a lower part in an (x)-axial direction. The light data pulse train is reflected by brazed grating 5, but the wave fronts slant because of a difference in optical path length to cause time delay at both ends of the sheet beams. The optical path lengths of the reference pulses 6 and light data pulse train 7 are adjusted to match the wave fronts and they are made incident on a nonlinear optical medium 9 from a linear lens 8. Remarkable nonlinear optical effect is generated at the position where the individual wave fronts of both the light pulses are made incident on the medium 9 at the same time and output light affected by the nonlinear optical effect is detected as a space pattern by a photodetector array 10. As a result of the nonlinear optical effect, the generation position and modulation position of the output light correspond to time intervals of the individual pulses of time series data pulses, so the time series signal can be detected as the data pattern of the space train.
