Abstract: A dispersion flattened non-zero dispersion shifted optical waveguide fiber which includes a central core region surrounded by an outer cladding region, the central core region having an alpha less than 4. The optical fiber has a dispersion at a wavelength of about 1550 nm of between about 4 ps/nm/km and about 8 ps/nm/km, and a dispersion slope of less than 0.025 ps/nm 2 /km at every wavelength between about 1525 nm and 1650 nm.

Abstract: A optical fiber, for example a Dispersion Compensation (DC) fiber, for compensating dispersion of a transmission fiber (such as a NZDSF) and transmission line including same. The fiber has a refractive index profile having a first moat with a negative delta (Delta2), and a second moat with a negative delta (Delta4) wherein the fiber exhibits a negative total dispersion at 1550 nm, and kappa at 1550 nm of less than 75 nm. The DC fiber, when used in a transmission line, may provide low residual dispersion across the C band when such lines include transmission fibers with total dispersion between 2 and 6 ps/nm/km and dispersion slope less than 0.092 ps/nm /km at 1550 nm.

Abstract: Disclosed is an optical waveguide fiber that simultaneously exhibits large effective area and good resistance to bend induced attenuation, as measured by any of the tests known in the art. The cut off wavelength is controlled to allow single mode operation over a wavelength range that extends from about 1340 nm to 1650 nm. The optical waveguide fiber refractive index profile is simple in design allowing cost effective manufacture.

Abstract: Disclosed are refractive index profiles for total dispersion compensating optical waveguide fibers for use in high data rate, long length telecommunications systems. The optical waveguide fibers in accord with the invention provide substantially equal compensation of total dispersion over a range of wavelengths, thus facilitating wavelength division multiplexed systems. Also disclosed are spans of optical waveguide fiber that include a length of transmission fiber together with a length of the compensating fiber. The spans are joined end to end in series arrangement to form the optical waveguide fiber part of a telecommunication system.

Abstract: An optical transmission system is provided. The system includes a series of consecutive blocks of optical fiber. Each block of the system includes a first, second and third series of spans of optical fiber, where the second series of spans compensates for accumulated dispersion in the first and third series in the wavelength range of transmission. Optionally either the first or third series can be omitted.

Abstract: An optical waveguide fiber having an effective area of greater than about 60 mum at a wavelength of about 1550 nm, a dispersion slope of less than 0.07 ps/nm /km at a wavelength of about 1550 nm, and a zero-dispersion wavelength of less than about 1500 nm. In preferred embodiments, the optical fiber has a mode field diameter greater than 9 mum at 1550 nm and includes a first core region with a positive relative refractive index, a first annular core region with a positive relative refractive index, and a second annular core region having a negative refractive index, wherein the the second annular core region begins at a radius greater than the mode field diameter and ends at a radius less than about 2.5 times the mode field diameter. Cabled cutoff wavelengths are less than about 1300 nm.
