Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single mode optical waveguide fiber designed to be used in a high performance communication system. SOLUTION: The core distribution of this invention is such that bending characteristics are improved for the purpose of providing improved durability in adverse environment. By providing a zero dispersion wavelength not less than the upper limit of an operation window, the total dispersion in the expanded wavelength window is maintained low. In addition, the cut-off frequency rises at the operation window or below. Even if a waveguide has an extremely low attenuation, the manufacturing convenience is maintained.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to exhibit a higher cut-off frequency than improvement of bending resistance and to impart low total dispersion in an expanded wavelength window by forming a waveguide fiber of a core region consisting of three regions and a clad layer enclosing these core regions, respectively providing the region and the layer with specific refractive index distributions and forming the core regions having inside and outside distribution volumes, etc., of a range of specific values. SOLUTION: This waveguide fiber has the core consisting of the three regions; the central region disposed with respect to the asymmetrical axis of the waveguide, the first adjacent region in contact with the central region and the second adjacent region in contact with the first adjacent region. The clad layer encloses the second adjacent region. When the refractive index distributions of the respective regions are compared, the central region (distributions 2, 4, etc.), and the second adjacent region (distributions 12, 14) have the refractive index relatively higher than the first adjacent region (distribution 10) and the clad layer (distribution 24). The waveguide has the inside distribution volume of the range of 2.90 to 3.90 and the outside distribution volume of the range of 7.20 to 10.20 and the ratio of the outside/inside distribution volumes is in a range of 1.96 to 3.04.

Further, the effective sectional area of the waveguide is >about 60 μm 2 , preferably, >65 μm 2 , and most preferably >70 μm 2 . Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion compensating optical fiber and a transmission system which compensate dispersion in the case of using a transmission fiber having zero dispersion in the wavelength of about 1310 nm in the band of 1550 nm. SOLUTION: The dispersion compensating optical fiber is provided with negative dispersion and zero or a negative dispersion gradient within the wavelength range of 1520 nm to 1565 nm. It its embodiment, the fiber is composed of a central core region 100 and a clad 101, and dispersion gradient within range of the wavelength including in the middle a core mode region 105 having a lower refractive index than that of the clad, a core ring region 102 having a refractive index between that of the central core region and that of the clad and a second core mode region 103 having a lower refractive index than that of the clad exists between zero and -1.2 ps/nm -km. The dispersion compensating fiber can be combined to a fiber amplifier in order to form a compensator for reducing an additional loss by it. In an embodiment, the dispersion compensating fiber is a distribution fiber amplifier.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide dispersion compensating optical fibers which compensate dispersion in the case where a transmission fiber having zero dispersion in about 1,310 nm are used in a 1,550 nm band, and to provide a transmission system. SOLUTION: The dispersion compensating optical fibers can provide larger dispersion more negative than -20 ps/nm-km and attenuation less than 1 dB/km at wavelengths in the 1,520 to 1,565 nm region. Certain of the dispersion compensating fibers also exhibit a dispersion versus wavelength relationship having a negative slope in the above wavelength region, in order to compensate the dispersion versus wavelength slope of the transmission fiber. An example of the structure includes a core moat region 55 consisting of a central core region 50 and a cladding 51 and having a refractive index lower than that of an intermediate cladding, and a core ring region 52 having a refractive index between those of the central core region and the cladding. The dispersion compensating fiber can be combined with a fiber amplifier to form a compensator for reducing additional loss due to the dispersion compensating fiber. In one embodiment, the dispersion compensating fiber is a distributed fiber amplifier.

The total dispersion is preferably positive and equal to at least 2 ps/nm-km at 1530 nm. This total dispersion together with a total dispersion slope less than about 0.1 ps/nm -km insures a minimum FWM effect over the wavelength window.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a single mode optical waveguide fiber profile that provides relatively large effective area while limiting macrobend loss. The large effective area results from configuring the core of the waveguide fiber to shift propagated light power away from the waveguide center. Macrobend loss, as measured by pin array or 20 mm mandrel testing, is maintained low by means of a power-limiting index depression surrounding the central core region of the waveguide. In addition, low attenuation is achieved and cut off wavelength is controlled to provide a telecommunications operating window in the wavelength range of about 1250 nm to 1700 nm.
