Abstract: A shaped article and method for making the article is disclosed. The method involves forming a raw material mixture of a thermosetting resin which can be either one or more solid resins or one or more liquid resins, hydrophilic filler, temporary organic binder, and optionally an effective amount of extrusion aids. When the resin is a liquid, the filler is at least carbonizable. When the resin is a solid, the filler can be carbonizable and/or inorganic. The mixture is extruded into a shaped article, dried, and the resin is cured. The cured article can be further carbonized and activated. The activated carbon, especially a honeycomb can be used for adsorbing components from a workstream.

Abstract: The invention concerns activated carbon honeycomb catalyst beds for remov ing mercury and other toxic metals from flue gas of a coal combustion system . The activated carbon honeycomb can remove greater than 90% mercury from fl ue gas with, a simple design and without adding material to the flue gas. A method for manufacturing the activated carbon honeycomb catalyst bed involve s providing a honeycomb precursor batch composition comprising a synthetic c arbon precursor and at least one toxic metal adsorption co-catalyst, shaping the batch composition to form a honeycomb green body, curing, heat treating and activating the carbonized synthetic carbon precursor.

Abstract: Composite cordierite honeycomb structures especially suitable for diesel exhaust filtration applications comprise a non-oxide polycrystalline phase constituting 10-70% by weight, with the remainder of the ceramic material constituting a cordierite phase, the non-oxide polycrystalline phase being selected from the group consisting of carbides, nitrides, and borides. Preferably the non-oxide phase is either polycrystalline silicon carbide or polycrystalline silicon nitride and has a particle aspect ratio of less than 3. Inventive ceramic bodies are porous with an open porosity of at least 30%, preferably between 40% and 60%, and a median pore size of at least 5 micrometers, more preferably greater than 8 micrometers and less than 12 micrometers.
