Abstract: A shaped article and method for making the article is disclosed. The method involves forming a raw material mixture of a thermosetting resin which can be either one or more solid resins or one or more liquid resins, hydrophilic filler, temporary organic binder, and optionally an effective amount of extrusion aids. When the resin is a liquid, the filler is at least carbonizable. When the resin is a solid, the filler can be carbonizable and/or inorganic. The mixture is extruded into a shaped article, dried, and the resin is cured. The cured article can be further carbonized and activated. The activated carbon, especially a honeycomb can be used for adsorbing components from a workstream.

Abstract: A rigid, low expansion formable housing composition can be used to package optical waveguide couplers. The housing is in intimate contact with and strongly bonded to the coupler being packaged. The housing composition includes a formable polymeric resin, a glass-ceramic or ceramic or glass filler, and, optionally, strengthening fibers The filler has a low thermal expansion to compensate for the high expansion of the resin. A moisture barrier layer may be placed around the housing composition, and it is possible to incorporate a shock absorbing material between the housing and the moisture barrier layer.

Abstract: Composite cordierite honeycomb structures especially suitable for diesel exhaust filtration applications comprise a non-oxide polycrystalline phase constituting 10-70% by weight, with the remainder of the ceramic material constituting a cordierite phase, the non-oxide polycrystalline phase being selected from the group consisting of carbides, nitrides, and borides. Preferably the non-oxide phase is either polycrystalline silicon carbide or polycrystalline silicon nitride and has a particle aspect ratio of less than 3. Inventive ceramic bodies are porous with an open porosity of at least 30%, preferably between 40% and 60%, and a median pore size of at least 5 micrometers, more preferably greater than 8 micrometers and less than 12 micrometers.

Abstract: An integrated planar Bragg grating is fabricated by depositing layers of material onto a negative expansion substrate (100) to form a waveguide (120) , which is held in mechanical tension with the substrate (100). A Bragg gratin g (200) is then formed in the waveguide (120). As the temperature of the waveguide (120) increases, the mechanical tension between the waveguide (120 ) and the substrate (100) is relieved, such that the peak reflection wavelengt h of the Bragg grating (200) remains nearly constant.
