Abstract: Phenol or phenol-formaldehyde containing waste water is purified with chlorine dioxide by treating the waste water with alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorite in the presence of formaldehyde and the weight ratio of formaldehyde to phenol is between 0.5 to 2:1 and the mole ratio of the sum of phenol + formaldehyde to chlorite is between 1:1.2 to 1:2, whereupon the treated water is decolorized, in a given case in known manner.

Abstract: Process for the production of unsaturated ethers, in particular isopropenyl methyl ether (IPM), by pyrolysis of a ketal-containing or acetal-containing mixture, in particular dimethoxypropane (DMP), in the liquid phase in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid, according to the following reaction scheme:wherein R1=H or alkyl with 1-8 C atoms; R2=H, CH3-, C2H5-, or Cl-; R3=alkyl with 1-8 C atoms; R4=H, CH3-, C2H5-, or C3H7-, and R1 and R4 may be joined to form a 5-, 6-, or 7-membered ring. DMP is produced by the process from acetone and methanol by reaction in an acidic heterogeneous ion exchanger, the product being isolated by extraction with aqueous alkaline solution. In particular the process involves combining the IPM reaction product with the DMP reaction product, which permits the execution of a stable recycling process in which the methanol-containing streams of the IPM and DMP stages can be simultaneously extracted. The product may be isolated by the process by simple distillation of IPM from a mixture containing IPM, DMP and acetone.

The simplest and most economical process of the invention concerning the processing of the reaction product which facilitates the production of a highly concentrated product with an extremely low dimer, oligomer and by-product content, is characterised in that the concentration is conducted in such a way that the remaining extract contains less than 4 wt % and preferably less than 2 wt % of water. Animal feed supplement, mixtures for supplementing animal feed, e.g. with methionine or ammonium-MHA.

Abstract: Recovery of sulfuric acid used in hydrolysis of methylmercaptopropionaldehyde-cyanohydrin is carried out by combustion of sulfates produced during the reaction to give a sulfur dioxide-containing mixture, which is then reacted with hydrogen peroxide. Recovery of sulfuric acid used in hydrolysis of methylmercaptopropionaldehyde-cyanohydrin (MMP-CH) comprises converting sulfate salt precipitates produced during the hydrolysis to SO2 in a furnace. The SO2-containing mixture is passed through an aqueous solution containing sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, to convert the SO2 back to sulfuric acid. An Independent claim is also included for preparation of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutyric acid (MHA) by hydrolysis of MMP-CH in the presence of sulfuric acid to give MHA and ammonium hydrogen sulfate and/or ammonium sulfate. The MHA is isolated and the sulfuric acid is recovered and recycled using the above method.

Abstract: En procesos conocidos el MHA es aislado de la mezcla de reaccion obtenida por ácido hidrocianurico (HCN) a metilmercaptopropionaldehido (MNP) e hidrolisis de la cianhidrina de metilmercaptopropionaldehido (MMP-CH) con ácido sulfurico, para lo cual la mezcla de reaccion se pone en contacto con un solvente orgánico en los esencial inmiscible en agua en un sistema de extraccion fluido/fluido, para formar una solucion de extraccion, que consiste del solvente y del MHA transferido de la mezcla de reaccion, y el MHA se obtiene como un extracto de esa solucion de extraccion por medio de evaporacion. Esos procesos resuelven el problema del desperdicio de sulfatos al acoplarse con un sistema de recuperacion de ácido sulfurico. Para la operacion efectiva de este ultimo, las corrientes de desecho que contienen sales deben someterse a una evaporacion. De acuerdo con la invencion, el contenido de sal de la mezcla de reaccion antes de la extraccion fluido/fluido se ajusta a un nivel mayor que aproximadamente 50% en peso y preferentemente mayor 1 55% en peso den relacion a la cantidad total de los componentes no orgánicos en la mezcla de reaccion. Esto mejora el balance de energía del todo el proceso, elimina la necesidad de evaporar soluciones altamente corrosivas, aumenta la velocidad de conversion en la etapa de hidrolisis y mejora los coeficientes de distribucion en la extraccion. El ácido obtenido puede usarse como aditivo para forrajes de animales.

Abstract: Es conocido el aislamiento de MHA a partir de una mezcla de reaccion, que se obtiene por adicion de ácido prusico HCN) a aldehído metilmercaptopropionico (MMP) e hidrolisis de la ciahidrina del aldehído metilmercaptopropionico (MMP-CH) así obtenida con ácido sulfurico poniendo la mezcla de reaccion en contacto con un disolvente orgánico esencialmente no miscible con agua en un sistema de extraccion líquido/líquido, para formar una solucion de extraccion, que contiene el disolvente y MHA transformado de la mezcla de reaccion, obteniéndose el MHA como extracto a partir de esta solucion de extraccion por concentracion. El proceso más simple y economico posible de la invencion por lo que se refiere al tratamiento de los productos de reaccion, que facilita la preparacion de un producto altamente concentrado con un contenido extraordinariamente bajo de dímeros, oligomeros y subproductos, se caracteriza porque la concentracion se realiza de tal manera que el extracto remanente contiene menos de 4% en peso de agua, preferiblemente menos de 2% en peso de agua. Suplemento de piensos, y mezclas para la suplementacion de piesos, por ejemplo, con metionina o amonio-MHA.
