    Abstract: A process for the production of acrolein by dehydration of glycerol in the liquid phase or in the gaseous phase, in each case on acidic solid catalysts, is described. Compared with previously known processes, the space-time yield and catalyst service life may be surprisingly increased with higher selectivity by treating a glycerol-water mixture with a glycerol content of 10 to 40 wt. % at 180 DEG to 340 DEG C. (liquid phase) or at 250 DEG to 340 DEG C. (gaseous phase) on a solid catalyst with an Ho value (Hammett acidity function) of less than +2, preferably less than -3.

    Abstract: The production of L-carnitine by racemic fission of D,Lcarnitinenitrile salts, in particular of D,Lcarnitinenitrilechloride, using fission reagents that are optically active, separation of the diastereomeres, reduction of the diastereomeres that contain the L-carnitinenitrile to a salt of an acid that is not optically active, and saponification of the L-carnitinenitrile salt, this leading to a high yield and high enantiomere purity if N-acetyl-L-proline is used as the fission reagent. When this is done, the (LL)-diastereomere is separated from the diastereomere mixture in crystalline form, and a second fractionating crystallisation stage, which has been customary up to this time, is eliminated.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of .epsilon.-caprolactone having a purity of 99.9% and increased colour and storage stability which comprises feeding .epsilon.-caprolactone, which has been made by reacting cyclohexanone with a solution of a percarboxylic acid, into a first distillation unit, operating at 0.1 to 500 mbars and drawing off as the top product a mixture consisting of .epsilon.-caprolactone and lower-boiling impurities, feeding the bottom product of said first distillation unit into a second distillation unit, operating at 0.1 to 500 mbars and then drawing off the pure .epsilon.-caprolactone as the top product. The .epsilon.-caprolactone is useful as an intermediate for the production of known useful compounds such as polyesterols which are subsequently converted to polyurethanes.

    Abstract: 1,2,4-triazin-5-one compounds of the general formula (I) (I) where R is are prepared by reacting a compound of general formula (II) (II) in which R is defined above with either (a) a tertiary alcohol of general formula (III) HO-R'(III) in which R' is a t-alkyl group having 4 to 18 carbon atoms, especially t-amyl or t-octyl or preferably t-butyl or (b) an alkene of general formula (IV) (IV) in which R1 and R2 are the same or different and are hydrogen or an alkyl group and R3 and R4 are the same or different and wherein the alkyl groups in each case can be 1 to 15 carbon atoms and wherein preferably R1 and R2 are hydrogen and R3 and R4 each are methyl to form an alpha -ketocarboxylic acid amide of general formula (V) (V) and this, in a given case after previous saponification to the free acid, condensed with thiocarbohydrazide to form a 1,2,4-triazin-5-one compound of general formula (VI) (VI) and then the mercapto group is methylated.
