    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for a resin raw material, etc., in a high yield, by subjecting a polyhydric alcohol, an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound and formaldehyde to an aldol/Cannizzaro reaction in the presence of a base. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution or suspension containing (A1 ) >=10 mol% of a compound of formula I (W is an organic group: (w) is valence of OH), (A2 ) 10-70 mol % of formaldehyde and (A3 ) >=10 mol% of an alkaline (earth) metal compound is reacted with (A4 ) a compound of formula II (Z is a 1-6C alkyl; X is Z, etc.; Y is X, etc.), the residual A1 , the residual A2 and the residual A3 by continuously or periodically adding the compound, etc., to the aqueous solution or suspension so as to make the component A2 based on the component A4 constantly excessive in a reaction mixture. The reaction is carried out in the molar ratios the components A1 , A2 and A3 equivalents to the component A4 of 0.05-20. 2-15 and 1-3 respectively in a water phase at pH >=7 at 0-100 deg.C. The reaction mixture is acidified to isolate the objective compound of formula III [OV is a group of formula IV (M is CH2 OH, etc.; (n) is 1-5); (m) is 1-w].

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a cyano compound by such an ammoxidation reaction as enabling to use one or more other ammonia sources instead of gaseous ammonia. SOLUTION: This method for producing a cyano compound comprises subjecting a cyano compound of the formula: R-CN (R is H or an organic group) as an ammoxidizable organic compound to an ammoxidation reaction with an ammonium salt as an ammonia source and with an oxygen source in the presence of an ammoxidation catalyst at a temperature of 100-700 deg.C. The employment of the solution of the ammonium salt enables improved fine dispersion, in its turn, improved contact, and gives the cyano compound of ammoxidation product in an enhanced yield.

    Abstract: 1,3-propanediol (PD) is obtained by hydration of acrolein to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (HPA) with subsequent catalytic hydrogenation. 4-oxa-1,7-heptanediol (OD) occurs as a yield-reducing by-product. According to the invention, in order to increase the 1,3-propanediol yield, the OD which is separated by distillation during working-up of the reaction mixture containing PD and OD is treated in aqueous solution at from 100 to 300.degree.C with an acid solid catalyst, in particular an acid zeolite, and the reaction mixture from which the solid catalyst has been removed is returned into the working-up stage of the reaction mixture containing PD and OD.

    Abstract: 2-(Alkoxymethyl)acrolein of the formula which is produced from acrolein, an alcohol ROH and formaldehyde, was previously only obtainable in a two-step process with moderate yield and at high cost. According to the invention the reaction takes place in one step, with a good yield being obtained, in that acrolein is reacted with a substantially equimolar quantity of a source of formaldehyde in the presence of at least an equimolar quantity of the alcohol ROH and a catalytic quantity of a catalyst system based on a secondary amine and a mineral acid at a pH value of the reaction mixture in the range of 1 to less than 7.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-hydroxyalkanals having 3 to 12, in particular 3 or 4 carbon atoms, by hydration of the corresponding 2-alkenals with water in a homogeneous phase in the presence of an acid catalyst. The previously known hydration using mineral acids or carboxylic acids as catalyst results in low volume/time yields and/or low selectivities. These disadvantages can be avoided by using, as catalyst, a dissolved acid-base buffer which results in a pH of from 2 to 5 in the reaction mixture and the acid component and corresponding base of which are present in a total quantity of from 0.5 to 40% by weight in the reaction mixture. The preferred buffers composed of a low monobasic carboxylic acid and a tertiary amine can easily be recycled.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1,1,3-trialkoxypropane by acid-catalysed reaction of acrolein with a C1 to C6 alcohol, which can be carried out well on a large scale and leads to a higher selectivity. According to the invention the process comprises (a) the reaction, in the presence of a solid acid catalyst which is insoluble in the reaction mixture, (b) a partial neutralisation of the reaction mixture, using an amine or basic ion exchanger and (c) specific working up by distillation of the reaction mixture and recirculation of fractions containing useful materials; aqueous fractions containing recyclable useful materials are largely dehydrated by pervaporation prior to being recirculated.
