    Abstract: Moldings based on silica having a hollow cylindrical configuration with internal reinforcing stays or spokes leading from an inner wall of a hollow cylinder to the center of the molding or in the form of miniliths having passageway channels therethrough, are produced by homogenizing silica with methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, wax and/or polyethylene glycol. Water and optionally aqueous alkaline ammonia solution are added, and the mixture is subjected to kneading and forming, extruding, optionally cutting the extrudate to the desired length by means of a cutting device, drying at a temperature from 20 to 150° C., and annealing for a period from 30 minutes to 10 hours at a temperature of 400 to 1200° C. The moldings can be used as catalyst supports for the production of unsaturated esters from olefins, organic acids and oxygen in the gas phase and and can be used in particular for the production of vinyl acetate monomer.

    Abstract: Moldings are disclosed for use as a catalyst or catalyst support for hydrating olefin, such as ethylene and propylene. The moldings are based on a pyrogenically produced mixed oxide having the following physicochemical parameters:The moldings are produced by homogenizing pyrogenically produced mixed oxide as desired with water and one or more compounds selected from the group of methylcellulose, methylhydroxyethylcellulose, wax, polyethylene glycol, magnesium stearate or aluminium stearate; drying the product at a temperature of 70-150° C.; optionally comminuting to yield a powder; optionally compression molding the powder to yield moldings; and performing heat treatment for a period of 0.5 to 10 hours at a temperature of 400 to 1200° C. Prior to drying, the mixture may also be subjected to kneading and/or shaping processes and extruded.

    Abstract: A pressed article (I) is based upon pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide having a pore volume of 0.5-1.8 ml/g. Independent claims are included for: (i) the production of (I) by mixing pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide with methylhydroxyethylcellulose, wax and polyethylene glycol and water followed by extrusion, optionally cutting the extrudate to a desired length, drying at 70-150 degrees C and heating at 400-1200 degrees C for up to 10 hours; (ii) a supported catalyst (II) comprising (I) for the production of vinylacetate monomer, that contains palladium (Pd) and/or Pd compounds and alkali compounds; gold (Au) and/or Au compound (Pd/alkali/Au system) or cadmium (Cd) and/or Cd compounds (Pd/alkali/Cd system) or barium (Ba) and/or Ba compounds (Pd/alkali/Ba system) or Pd, alkali compounds and mixture of Au and/or Cd and/or Ba; and (iii) the production of the catalyst support (II) by soaking, spraying, condensing, dipping or precipitating the Pd, Au, Cd and/or Ba compounds onto (I), optionally reducing the metal, washing to remove the resulting chloride content, impregnating with alkali acetate or alkali compound that is converted under reaction conditions at least partially to alkali acetate.

    Abstract: Removing an organic compound from an aqueous solution comprises (a) providing the aqueous solution containing the organic compound and a hydrophobic organic solution containing a liquid cation exchanger, where the liquid cation exchanger is hydrophobic, (b) contacting the aqueous solution and the organic solution, and (c) separating the organic solvent from the aqueous solution, where the organic compound is an ammonium compound (I) and the liquid cation exchanger is a fatty acid. Removing an organic compound from an aqueous solution comprises (a) providing the aqueous solution containing the organic compound and a hydrophobic organic solution containing a liquid cation exchanger, where the liquid cation exchanger is hydrophobic, (b) contacting the aqueous solution and the organic solution, and (c) separating the organic solvent from the aqueous solution, where the organic compound is an ammonium compound of formula (NH 3 +>-A-COOR 1>) (I) and the liquid cation exchanger is a fatty acid. R 1> : H, CH 3, C 2H 5or negative charge; and A : unsubstituted, linear at least 3C, preferably 8C-alkylene. An independent claim is included for a reaction mixture comprising the aqueous solution and the hydrophobic organic solution, where the liquid cation exchanger is a fatty acid with greater than 12 carbon atoms.
