Abstract: Silane-modified oxide or silicate fillers have: (1) a fraction of pearls below 75 microns of below 15 wt.% as determined by sieve analysis; and (2) a median particle size of 130-500 microns, determined by laser diffraction without ultrasonic treatment. An Independent claim is also included for production of the silane-modified fillers by reacting the micro-pearled or microgranulated filler with a silane in a pressure- or temperature-compressed gas.

An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the process, comprising at least one pressure vessel, having at least one gas-permeable internal container, screen or insert to receive (I), at least one gas inlet and outlet located in a fluidized bed of (I) and a radially placed gas inlet and outlet from the fluidized bed (specifically such that gas can flow radially inwards from the outside or radially outwards from the inside).

Abstract: Silane-modified oxidic or siliceous filler with a bead fraction below 75 .mu.m of less than 15 wt.% and a median particle size distribution between 150 and 500 .mu.m which is produced by the reaction of at least one microbeaded or microgranular, oxidic or siliceous filler in a compressed gas with at least one silane. The silane-modified oxidic or siliceous fillers are used in rubber compounds.
